My grandmother was Bridie Maher, born December 6, 1893 at Kilmoroney. Her father was Patrick Maher, farmer, of Kilmoroney, and Bridget Maher (nee Quinn). The 1901 census shows her as one of nine children, including Joseph, born 1895. I am wanting to know if her brother is the Joseph (Joe) Maher involved in the 1921 IRA ambush at Barrowhouse. His dob would make him 25/26 at the time. My grandmother went to the Barrowhouse school and her mother and some siblings are buried in the Barrowhouse graveyard, so they definitely lived locally. Any information anyone can offer on whether Joseph could be my Nana's brother, or any other infromation on family members would be gratefully received.

Julie:
You may want to contact the Athy Kildare Library branch to see if they can help. It is likely that Joseph was Bridget's brother since there were no other Maher families in the area that I can see.

Possibly, they may redirect you to a Co. Laois library branch.
