My grandfater's grandfather James Costigan was the granfather of Thomas Costigan (b. 1843   in Rapla near THe village of Cullohill Co Laois formerly Queen's County the ) who married Mary Gee & emigated to New York in 1867 where he worked for John Mitchel  paper , was a member of Tammeny Hall for  a few years was involved in local politics, reared a very successful family including Dr Gregory , Lucius, Thomas etc. They in turn had many children & must have many descendents alive today especially In N.Y.

Naturally I would like to make contact wih them & perhaps  introduce them to their many Irish cousins who have prospered in this country & abroad . I myself have retired from teaching & have been busy gathering info about the family & clan .I would  like  to put  the American branch in the picture & bring it up to date while I have the energy. I live in Bray near Dublin

The original Tom seems to have been quite a character. I am aware that he died in 1902 of Bright's disease. JOHN COSTIGAN

    Welcome to ireland Reaching Out!

It is rare for us to get a message where someone in Ireland is looking for American connections. One suggestion is to consider a short letter/notice in the Irish Echo newspaper about your quest to find Costigan connections in the States. The Irish Echo is based in NYC but others of Irish descent primarily on the Eastern seaborad also get the paper which is weekly.

Another thought is to consider autosomal DNA testing using Family Tree DNA or Ancestry DNA. Possibly you will match with an American Costigan who has also taken a DNA test.
