Trying to find evidence of a Richard Steele (b 1773) or his sister Lydia Margaret Steele (b 1770) born in Kyle parish. Family lore says they came from Kyle, Co. Wexford but have found evidence of Steele's in Kyle, Laois so want to rule out a possible error in the county name.

Hi There, Thanks very much for these references! All clues I will store until I can make some link that indicates our Steele's are related to these - certainly many of the names are common in our family.
I have found in a book by George A. Aitken The Life of Sir Richard Steele which links a William Steele to a William Harvey in 1662 when they (kinsmen of the Late Lord Chancellor of Ireland) who crossed clandestinely from Dover to Ireland. In Appendix 1 a family tree of the Cheshire Steeles is shown but the oldest date is 1705 so hard to connect it to any of the names available now. Several generations missing.
According to that same book William Steele (1610-1680) Lord Chancellor of Ireland 1656 married a Mary Mellish who was the widow of Michael Harvey (who was brother to Dr Harvey who discovered the circulation of blood).
They had 3 children
1. William (I think is the one who crossed from Dover) but there is no further information;
2. Benjamin d 1705 in St.Andrew's Holborn with no male issue; and
3. Mary who married George Boddington she died 1673 and is buried in St.Margaret's Lothbury.
The connection between Steele's and Harvey's makes me wonder - the Kyle Estate in Kyle Parish Wexford (Parish name changed to Parish of Kilpatrick in 1829) was the seat of W.Harvey Esq. Wondering if William Steele and Mary's descendants through their son William might have ended up in Kyle Wexford. Maybe there is a significance to the name Kyle House in Laois and Kyle Village/Parish/Estate in Wexford.
Our Richard Steele 1773-1856 (brother of Lydia Margaret Steele D'Acre/Deaker 1770-1847) went to the West Indies possibly with two brothers before 1802. He settled in Grenada and had many children. I have a fair bit of information about his decendants but only an Irish Deaker family bible reference is to his birth in Kyle Wexford. His will was probated in 1859 in the English and Wales National Probate Calendar but makes no mention of his origins. In Ireland Richard's sister Lydia Margaret Steele (or Margaret Lydia Steele) married a John D'Acre. Her descendants changed their name to Deaker and were located in Dublin in the early mid 1800s some branches went to Australia, some to Canada.
Hoping to find the links, thanks again, Susan

I have a Richard Steele of Kyle, Queen's County. He was my gggggrandfather. His daughter Mary married Francis Biddulph in 1800.
Biddulph, Francis of Borrisoleigh, Co. Tipperary, Esq., and Mary Steele of Eirke, spinster, 31 December 1800.(C. of I., Ossory, Ferns and Leighlin Ms. GOI, 612-617).

I thought I would follow up my earlier comment with some more details. Mary Steele of Kyle in Queen's County, daughter of Richard Steele,married Francis Biddulph of Borrisoleigh, County Tipperary, in 1800. The Biddulph family - again through family lore - were reputed to have come from Kilpatrick in Wexford but this has always been a matter of discussion [Francis Biddulph or Byddolph of Kilpatrick, Co. Wexford]. It seems more than a coincidence that these families are linked by marriage.
John Steele of Kyle House, Mary's brother and son of Richard Steele, married Elizabeth Massey, daughter of Eyre Massey.

Thanks Nicola! Sorry taken so long to answer - recently have come across info that we may be descended from Harriet Steele (Daughter of Sir Richard Steele of Hampstead and Dorathea Armstead). Harriet married her cousin Major Robert Steele of Summer's Cove, near Kinsale (Major Robert being son of Robert Steele 1699-? and Sarah Palmer). All to be proven but a new theory we are following, Cheers Susan
