  • Hi Bev, you do not give a year and religion as prior to civil records we use church records, I searched Hunter in Laois from about 1790 and the first record is a civil record from 1866, Ellen mother Watson, RC Church records for Laois are very poor in some parishes while Church of Ireland records can be patchy as 40% plus were lost in the civil war in 1922.

    You can view civil marriages for Protestants here from 1845, see 4 in Tullamore which is in Offaly formely Kings County and the birth in 1866 is in Portarlington which is in Laois formely Queens County, this town straddese both counties.

    See this free site https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ click civil records and off you go, church records for Laois not on it.

    I searched the Tithes here and there is a Richard in Lea in 1825, select Queens County, http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp

    If you are looking for actual relatives I suggest you try Facebook which has many genealogy private groups including one for Laois.

    Good Luck

  • Bev, as I was doing another reply I discovered I had made an error while searching marriages, had left in a spouses name and there are 2 early Hunter marriages in Laois between 1810 and 1820, I also had a light bulb moment and included Offaly in my search, so many Hunters, see a Ralph born in 1806 also a William, two of but one is Military. Mary Anne also and some others but different parishs in Offaly but the ones I mention are on the county boundary or close, it is not usual as even now I live in Louth but church wise I am in Meath.

    I also looked in Grifftihs Valuation and see some Hunter in Geashill, Offaly on the border near Portarlington etc see http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=nameS…;

    In 1816 a James Hunter married a Jane Butler, Mountmellick and a John Hunter married a Catherine Delaney in Rosnallis in 1827, close to Portarlington. In 1825 in Tullamore a William Emmitt married a Matty Hunter,
