  • Hi Bruce
You don't give a first name for your people.
www.rootsireland.ie/ (subscription site) has recently changed its search criteria - it now insists on the inclusion of a first name or initial.
    When I don't have a first name I start at A & try all 26 so it's a tedious process.
I searched with the surname variant option to cover both names.
    Initial A yielded a hit:
Name: Anne Vicars Date of Birth:
    Date of Baptism: 01-Jan-1786
    Address: Rathdowney Parish/District: RATHDOWNEY
    Gender: Female County Co. Laois
    Denomination: Roman Catholic
Father: Richard Vicars Mother: Mary Ally
    Occupation:
    Sponsor 1 /
    Informant 1: John Bermingham Sponsor 2 /
    Informant 2: Cath Heilan
Others: Eliza 1786 parents Thomas & Catherine address Coolkerry, Rathdowney
Patt 1781 Patt & Bridget Shallow Cloonagudden Rathdowney
    I confess I didn't try X Y or Z!
There were none of either name in the Tithe Applotments in Laois 1823-37 (free site) or Griffiths Valuation 1848-64 7 only a few in the 1901 & 1911 censuses (free)

  • Thank you so much for a reply to myenquiry.

I am so sorry not to provide the first name as the form does not provide the field for it which I was very surprised. However the followings are the surname variation:

    Vicars James or John

    Vickers James or John

    b. Abt. 1789

    He was Roman Catholic

  • Ok had another try on rootsireland with J for all counties but the only match I got was a John McVIcer 1789 Antrim & he's a Proddy!

http://Name: John McVicker Date of Birth: Date of Baptism: 20-Feb-1789 Address: Parish/District: SHANKILL ST ANNE'S, BELFAST Gender: Male County Co. Antrim Denomination: Church of Ireland Father: Hector McVicker Mother: Sarah McVicker

Family Search (free site) has some Richard John Vicars 1794 & John McVicker 1797 birth records but all in Dublin & no religion supplied

http://Richard John Vicars birth: 5 January 1794 , Dublin, Dublin, Ireland death:

  • Ok ColCaff, Thank you so much for the early reply...

I will be investigating the above info, However Belfast seems to be prety up north, Dublin could be more probable.  Although you mention a Protestant, that would be unlikely since all children are RC I do not know about is wife (Mary Whalen) beeing a Proddy or RC.

Nevertheless, your informations are still plausible and worth for me to go further, I won't deny the origins (Belfast) and/or the name variant (McVicker)

And wow, in 30 years of researches, I've never had such plausible leads for me to investigate further.

Thank you so much for your help I will keep you posted on my investigation.

  • Since you were so nice about it I went back & checked X Y & Z with no luck.
The Dublin records had no religion mentioned.
Glad to hear you have an open mind on the records; too many of our people discount possibilities that they possibly shouldn't.
Good luck with it and post again if you need further help.

  • Awhhhh!

No I prefer saying that you are the one so nice.

Col I'm so happy to be able to make a little crack in my huge brickwall, without you it was rock solid.

You actualy gave me the motivation to look further out there.

You see on my mother's ancestry I was able to go to the 25th generation, but as for my father I'm stuck to the 4th generation wich is the one I'm working on...

Thank you so much Col, I realy appreciate the effort and time you've put into this search!

    Please accept my best regards

    Bruce

  • Hallo, Vicars researchers

    I have this evidence of a Richard Vicars:in 1790:

"Will of John Mason of Rathdowney, 1790 (Registry of Deeds, Dublin 41)

.........Witnesses Rev. Thomas M Prior, Clke,  Henry Gouldsborough and Richard Vicars, gent., all of Rathdowney"

www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/ire/laois/churches/dub-marriage-bonds.txt: Dublin Prerogative Marriage Licences (marriage Bonds) has this information about Protestant marriages in the C18th.:
    - a Richard Vicars living in Skerk (?Skirke) Queens County, Gent., who m. Elizth. Davies in the Church of St. Nicholas Without, Dublin, on 14 Sept. 1722.

    - a James (Jacob) Vicars of Skirke, and a Robert Vicars of Rathdowney.

1722 seems too early to refer to this Richard Vicars being the one mentioned in John Mason's Will of 1790: probably thie Richard referred to is a son of Robert Vicars of Rathdowney Esq., who m Rebecca Cooke on .27 Mar 1736 in St. Mary, Dublin

Hope this provides something new for you.
