The Rock of Dunamase, between Portlaoise and Stradbally is the most famous landmark in in Laois.
45 metres in height.
Started as an early christian dun known as Dun Masc "the Fort of Masc"
It's said that Dun Masc was plundered by the vikings in 843 ad and the abbot of Terryglass was killed.
Beautiful Laois can be seen from the highest point on the 'Rock' with breath taking scenery on fine day.
Many thanks for this
