My ancestor, Robert Carter, was born 27 Sep 1790 in Rathdowney, Queens County, Ireland, according to his British Army records. He served in the Army from 1814-1818, and then he emigrated to Ontario, Canada. His parents were William Carter and Rebecca Julian. He was a Protestant. Many years ago I searched the baptismal register at Rathdowney Church of Ireland, but did not find his baptism. I'd love to find more records of this familiy!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

This link provides infomation on the availability of records for Church of Ireland parishes in Ireland. It appears the records for Rathdowney are held in the Representative Church Library in Dublin. I don't know if you searched in Dublin many years ago or at a local church. If you did not go to Dublin then you may want to visit the library at some point.

I checked the Tithe records for Rathdowney and there was only one record for a Carter-- Richard in Rathdowney.

  • Hello Roger! Thank you very much for that information. I didn't realize the Rathdowney registers were now at the RCBL. I saw them when they were at the church. I noticed that Richard in Rathdowney in the Tithe Book also. And there was a David who married in 1798 in Rathdowney too, according to the Ossory marriage bonds. I think it may indeed be time to study the Rathdowney registers in further detail. Thank you again, Kyle
