My great uncle Thomas Feehan of Coolrain, Co. Laois is in the 1901 census living at 2 Mill Street Rathdowney. He is 17 years old, a scholar and boarder at this address. Is there any way of finding information on the school he may have attended? I am visiting the USA in September and will be meeting up with his daughters and grandchildren and would like to be able to give them this information. I will be in Ireland at the end of May and could pick up info if I know where I can get hold of it. Thanks

    Hello Maria,

According to this post, Catholics were not educated in a dedicated schoolhouse in rathdowney until 1903,

But they would have been schooled in private houses.

    Best regards Michael.

  • Many thanks for your reply Michael. Interesting to hear there was no school as such and if my g. Uncle was educated in a private house then I  will be unlikely ever to find out further info. Shame !! Thanks again. Maria.
