We, the Community Council, have established a Community Office in Knockainey, and John and Anne Marie who work there are currently working on research for the Week of Welcomes which takes place here from June 28th to July 1st. They are helping to trace the descendents of those who left here over the years, and it is a possibility that you may be part of that Knockainey diaspora!  Murnane is an old family name in Lough Gur., and the name is still in the area.  The hill you refer to is Knockfennel, and it's the higher of the two hills overlooking Lough Gur, the other is called Knockadoon..

My name is Timothy Cleary.My ancestors were from Knockainey/Lough Gur.My 4ggrandfather was Dan Cleary,born 1782  married to Ellen Fitzgerald.One of their daughters name was Bridget Cleary who married a James Murnane in 1856,and had a daughtr named Ellen Murnane.Also my 3Ggrandparents are from Lough Gur/Knockainey were Bridget Fitzgerald,and Thomas Gleeson who along with John Cleary came to Springfield Mass. in 1850.

Great to hear from you.  My name is Aine Barry and I am part of Lough Gur Development - a local community group.  In conjunction with Knockainey Community Council we are working to try to trace descendants of people who emigrated from the Knockainey/Lough Gur area and invite them back to the area for a "week of welcomes" from June 21st to July 1st - yes I know its a bit more than a week!

Anyway the Murnanes are still living in Lough Gur - and we have plenty of information about them.  What exactly would you like to discover and I can see what I can do to help you find out more.

Thank you for the email.I have done a lot of research about my ancestors who left Knockainey/Lough Gur.I have been to Knockainey about 10 or 12 times when I come home to County Limerick.I first came to Knockainey about 10 years ago to research my family at the home of the parish priest who had past away a few years ago.He was a wonderful and kind person.My ggggrandfather was Daniel Cleary married to Ellen Fitzgerald and had several children,one of their daughters (Bridget Cleary) had married John Murnane around 1855.Acccording to church records at Knockainey had a daughter named Ellen baptized Oct. 1856.My gggrandfather named John Cleary born in Lough Gur came to Springfield Mass. left Knockainey with Thomas Gleeson and Bridget Fitzgerald ( who are my gggrandparents).I was wondering if you might have any information on any Gleeson who lived in the Lough Gur area born around 1820.Also if you might have any information on the Fitzgeralds.My  ggggrandmother was Ellen Fitzgerald who was born around 1785.Also my gggrandmother Bridget Fitzgerald born around 1820.If you have any information on any of the above I would appreciate it to a great deal.Also if it was possible if you might have any information on the desendents of Ellen Murnane Baptized on Oct 4 1856Her parents were John Murnane and Bridget Cleary.Thank you again for your time and I look forward to visting this summer.One more thing,the last time I was there,there was only one pub accross the old church.Is that the pub we are to meet at.Thanks again-Timothy Cleary

Great to hear from you.  I spoke to Pat Murnane who is living locally and is probably a relation of yours!  He is going to do a bit of research for you on the Murnane side to see which Bridget Cleary is yours. He is also very willing to meet up with you when you come home.  I will check out the Gleeson/Fitzgerald connection myself and get back to you early next week on this.

The pub you are probably thinking of is Moloneys which is in Knockainey.  We are working closely with Knockainey for the week of welcomes and the week will start in Lough Gur on 21st June when we celebrate the longest day of the year.  A number of events will be held in Lough Gur from 21st to 25th June and then the events will move to Knockainey from 25th June to 1st July.  We will be in touch nearer to the time to give you more details of all that is happening.

I visited the parish priest yesterday and spent some time going through the parish records.  According to the baptismal records there was only one John Murnane living in Lough Gur between 1800 and 1899 but he was married to Bridget Ryan and had only one child Mary who was born in 1837.

On the other hand, James Murnane was married to Bridget Cleary and had 5 children - Patrick, Margaret, Daniel, James and Michael.  In the baptismal records Ellen is baptised on 4/10/56 adn her parents are listed as John and Bridget Cleary and the witnesses are Daniel Cleary and Bridget Dooly.  

I also checked all marriage records in the parish for Bridget Cleary and between 1822 and 1854 4 Bridget Cleary's were married in the parish - one to John Dunne, one to Michael McGrath, one to Daniel Leo and one to James Murnane (but none to John Murnane).  It may well be that John Murnane married another Bridget Cleary in a different parish but given that Bridget was baptised in the parish and therefore we can assume that she was still living there it is unlikely.

The parish priest, local historian and I all believe that the name John was transcribed in error instead of James as in the church records we can find no evidence of a John Murnane living in Lough Gur at that time.  Given the date of Ellen's brith in 1856, one year after Patrick's in 1855 it seems logical to assume that they were siblings.   

If this is indeed the case then you are directly related to Pat Murnane that I mentioned in another post and he is very keen to meet you.  I don't know if you have seen the site of the original homestead but when you visit this summer Pat will take you and show it to you. Pat's brother Daniel still farms the land just as your ggggrandfather did all those years ago,.

Bridget Cleary & James Murnane had 6 children as I told you - Patrick stayed at home and married Nora from Fedamore and farmed the land, Ellen emigrated to America with Daniel who established a glass and mirror factory in St. Louis Missouri. I'm not sure what happened to Margaret, James and Michael as there is no record of their marriages in the parish.

You will see that Rosalie started this thread - she is a direct descendant of Daniel Murnane's - Ellen's brother and is also living in the States - do you know her?  If not, you can make contact through this thread. She has a photograph of Daniel Murnane taken in America with his wife - I wonder is there a a family resemblance between yourself and Daniel!!

In terms of Bridget Cleary - she was batpised on 21/2/1822 and her parents were Daniel Cleary and Ellen Fitzgerald (another reason to assume that the Bridget Cleary who married James Murnane is your Bridget as she named two of her children after her parents!).  She had four siblings - Michael baptised 24/10/1819, John baptised 7/7/1824, Mary baptised 6/8/1828 and Hanora baptised 24/10/1831.

You probably have a lot of this information already but if not I hope it has been helpful for you.

Just a bit more information for you - According to Griffiths valuation of 1851 Daniel Cleary your ggggrandfather who was married to Ellen Fitzgerald is shown as renting a house and land of 6 acres from Count de Salis.  This is shown as lot 31.  However in the land valuation of 1864 Daniel's name is crossed out and James Murnane is substituted instead and in the land valuation of 1889 this land passes to Patrick Murnane who died in 1909. James' name is clearly seen on the valuation.

According the information I just got from Seamus Murnane (Daniel's son, Pat's  nephew) Ellen & James Dwyer both died in Kilcullane, Ireland and their children went to live with the Murnanes in Lough Gur.  It would seem Ellen didn't come to the U.S.  I've never been able to find any record of her here.

Well ! 

My   4X great grandfather was a Michael Murnane who married an Anne Kelsall.. Our unfounded family story is that he was born in France  in 1789 and died in England around 1818...  I have joined this online site because I saw an interesting MURNANE and FRANCE connection with a posting  of a Pierre Murnane and a Marie Murnane settling in the Lough Gur area of Ireland... This is astonishing to me as we always thought it was a mixed-up story!

The Murnane surname is still carried on as a middle name in our Canadian family ...

I have the CORKE MURNANE available on the net .

Hi All

I am looking for a Catherine Mary Heffernan that was born maybe in Croom Limerick in 1941 to parents  Patrick Heffernan and mother Catherine Heffernan (formally MURNANE).. I believe Catherine was a typist and married someone from the Dublin area who was a mechanic...I do not have a name which makes it really difficult to trace.  Think she had an older sister Bridget and at least 2 brothers Michael and Thomus Heffernan.  Has anyone got any information please that would maybe help in tracing her.  I believe her sister may have moved and lived in the Dublin area also.

Are you all still discussing the Murnane family? My GGGgrandmother was Bridget Murnane born abt 1810

She Married Michael O'Neill Feb. 14, 1845.  At EMLY parish.  She was from Bartoose and Michael from Fethard Tipperary. They had a son Thomas born in 1847 and migrated to USA in 1848 with him.  I can find no mention of Thomas after their arrival but I can follow Bridget and Michael all the way to their deaths both in 1881 in Wisconsin.  They had several more kids after arriving here.
