I am seeking baptismal and marriage information regarding Bryan Cowley, born in 1788 in County Meath.  We believe the following information to be true:

He married Margaret Hopkins and had a son, John, born in 1818.  Apparently, she died, because he married Mary Flood, with who he dad several children:  Bernard (1827); Daniel (1830), Thomas (1835 or 1837), Patrick (1838), Katherine (1838), Michael (1846), and Philip (1846).  We believe they immigrated to America in 1850, landing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Two issues:  1) can you provide information confirming the above information, and 2) can you confirm the order of naming children after ancestors (my understanding is the first son would be named after his paternal grandfather, the second son after his father, the first daughter after her maternal grandmother, the second daughter after her mother, etc.  I do not have any information of how the subsequent children's names were chosen).

I would appreciate any assistance you can provide.  I am writing a book about our family history, and am anxious to confirm my understanding uncovered thus far through research.  Thank you.

  • Hello, way too late but I have been asked to look at unanswered queries and see 3 baptisms to the Cowley / Hopkins marriage however no one for John but I see the RC baptism record has a gap in 1818 from late January to the 1st August so assume your man is there, see https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0923

The 3 children are Margaret 1819; Jane 1821 and Bryan 1823, searched 1808 to 1828, see also some death records which stop in 1818 for Ratoath which is the parish. This parish has been developed greatly in the last two decades.

I see no record of the Cowley / Hopkins marriage. They would marry in the brides parish. I believe Irish naming patterns are outlined on the Ireland XO site.

    Hope this is some assistance
