 I am interested in knowing more about Edward Spillane who was listed in the Tithes as having land in common with four other people in Knockanroger. Find My Past has a record that appears to be part of an 1841 census, showing that Edward lived in Whiteville. It is likely he was a laborer on the White estate. It is very possible that this Edward is my 3rd ggrandfather. I have not found information on the White estate but am hoping that someone who is active in the Irish Reaching Out Program might know if there are White estate papers available that  might list the names of tenants.

Should I assume that if someone works on an estate, when they are no longer able to work or when they die, the family has to move off the estate? I ask this because I think that my gggrandfather John Spillane and his brother Edward/Edmond, who were in Loughan, Offaly (Finglas parish) in the 1830's and 1840's could be the sons of this Edward. The Spillanes in this area of Offaly appear to have come from the Aghnameadle/Nenagh area. They were not there at the time of the Tithes. If there was no land to inherit, I assume many sons moved on.

  • Thank you. I have used the "Sources"  in the National LIbrary of Ireland catalog.

    http://sources.nli.ie/        I  have learnd that if something says "public office record," it means that item is in the National Archives. Is that the best way to locate estate records? (I did locate one set for just one of my families and that was in the manuscript room at the National Library). I understand there are lots of records, not necessarily estate records, held by the National Archives, but they are not catalogued yet. I would appreciate knowing if I need to use another method of searching for estate records.

    It may be a good idea to start locally. You could try contacting Tipperary Libraries Local Studies and Archives to see if they have any records available.  Here is a link to their webpage:

    You could also try www.landedestates.ie formore infoeamtion on estates in Ireland.
