I am trying to find any information about Martha Anderson and her family.  I believe she was the daughter of William Anderson and Charlotte McGowan and was born around Dec. 30, 1827.  I'm told that she married John George on Aug 23, 1844 in Armagh.

John George was born about 1819 in Armagh, Ireland - would also like to uncover details of his life, who is family was, etc.  I'm told that he died Sept. 9, 1904 in Rivory, County Cavan.

Any information or direction would be greatly appreciated - it is my hope to gather enough details that I may make a trip to Ireland and see my ancestral lands.

  • Hi there,

Do you know what religion they were? If they were Roman Catholic, there are church records available for the diocese of Eglish (Armagh) dating from 1862. This is too late for you! Civil records date from 1864 - again too late! You could try writing to the parish priest who might then be able to offer you more advice.

Did they remain in Ireland? If so, please check the census records for 1901 and 1911 here: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffth's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.

Please post your message here (Cavan): http://www.irelandxo.com/group/county-cavan

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

  • I have quite a bit about George and Anderson families from Eglish and Grange parishes but I'd probably need a townland reference to be completely sure how your family fit in. Have you looked at the original records for the Anderson-George marriage or Martha Anderson's baptism?

I actually found this post while looking at a Knipe family. Your John and Martha had a son William who went to Armagh and married Jane Knipe. Jane's mother was Mary Anderson and her grandfather was Allen Anderson. Anderson is a pretty common name but I doubt that is a coinidence since he was from Cavan and she was from the exact part of Armagh as his parents.

  • Hi. I too have a William Anderson, farmer, Kings County born around 1834. Married a Galvin(Galvan)

Could he be a son of your William?

    Kind regards.

  • Hi Steve,

Thanks for your input - don't think they are connected.  My William is known to have had 5 children - and all accounted for.

    Best regards,

    Margaret
