Hello all! I am so excited that I found this web site. I have traced my family back to 1818 and I am having difficulties getting past this date. My last known ancestors name was Joesph Carson born in Eglish Armagh in 1818. His wifes maiden name was Elizabeth McGowan born 1819 Ireland. I have been told that Joesph had a brother named James. Joesph may have been a stone mason. At some point they imigrated to N America. Joesph died in Waterdown, Ontario,Canada in 1876. Joesph and Elizibeth had son Huge Carson born in Canada on 1845.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

You don't mention the religious denomination for your family. If they were Church of Ireland, Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie has C of I records for Eglish parish starting in 1803. Roots is a pay site to view records but they currently have a 40% off special. RC and Presbyterian records start after your family left for Canada.

Joseph Carson was Christened in Eglish on 30th November 1817 - parents were William and Anne and abode is given as Lisdown.

There are several more Births/Baptisms attributed to a William and Anne Carson but I believe there was more than one William and Anne Carson.

Next there is a Robert Carson who was Christened in Eglish on 24th November 1819 - again William and Anne are the parents but this time their abode is Tonagh.

Third record is for William Carson born 15th May 1826 and Christened 21st May 1826 - again William and Anne listed as parents but on this occasion their abode is Balibroky.  Record is also recorded as being 'spurious' which I take to mean 'born out of wedlock' and which is why I believe there was more than one William and Anne Carson.

Fourth record is for James Carson born 27th March 1830 and Christened 23rd May 1830 - William and Anne are the parents but the abode is different yet again this time being Cloughfin.

Final record is for Sarah Carson [difficult to read] which looks like she was born on 4th May 1835 and Christened 2nd August 1835 - William and Anne are listed as the parents but yet again abode has changed to Ballaghy.  Under Sarah's name is written the word 'Illegitimate'.

The two births recorded as 'illegitmate' ie William and Sarah both have their mother's name listed as Anne Mallon.

Around the same time as William and Anne were having children Christened in Eglish there were a number of other couples with the surname Carson having their children Christened as well ie: Robert and Rosanna Carson from Lisdown, John and Rachael Carson and Adam and Deborah Carson who were from Lisadian.

I didn't find any relevant marriage records.

    Hope this helps.

  • HI Veronica.

Merry Christmas to you. Thanks for your reply. First thing that confuses me is the Christened in Eglish on 30th November 1817 date. My records show his birth date to be 1918. So clearly he could not have been christeded before he was born. Or I have his birth date wrong? I did find his wifes name to be Nancy Anne Tindale 1796-1870. Would this match any records you could find?

Again, thank you so much for taking the time to look into this for me.

  • Merry Christmas James Kevin.  It is confusing which is why I took a copy of the particular page with the year on it [copy attached].  You said in a previous post you thought they might have been Presbyterian - there are Eglish Presbyterian records but I can't remember how far back they go and if memory serves me correctly they were very difficult to read.  See what you think of the attachment.  When I'm next down at PRONI I'll have a look at the Presbyterian records.
