I am visiting Northern Ireland for the first time next month. I want to visit the area of my ancestors, so please, does anyone have the following in their trees? The spelling of Steenson and Stevenson seems interchangeable. I would love to hear from you if you link up with the following:
- William Steenson born 1854 in Ballybrawley – father Joseph
- Joseph Steenson born ?, brother of above
- Margaret Hughes born 1844 married to William (above) at Eglish Parish Church in 1874
- Mary M Steenson born 1885 – Ballybrolly
- Margaret Ann Stevenson (my grandmother) born in 1887 Ballybrawley
- Ann Hughes born 1809 in Fermanagh (maybe aunt of Margaret Hughes)
Does Eglish Parish Church of Ireland still exist? Where is Ballybrolly and Ballybrawley; are they the same place? I cannot find villages with the names of Eglish, Ballybrolly and Ballybrawley. Any help would be appreciated as I do not know much about this family except they came to London by 1881.
Many thanks, Thelma

I'm sure our Northern Ireland expert will be able to give you more insight but here are a few items. The first link is the current list of C of I parishes in Co. Armagh. There is no Eglish listed as far as I can see. I'm wondering if the parish of Moy/Charlemont is the church you are looking for.
Ballybrolly is a small townland (135 acres) located in Eglish civil parish. I think Ballybrolly and Ballybrawley are the same place based on the info at the second link.

Eglish Church of Ireland is Holy Trinity or perhaps more commonly known as Drumsallan Church with Reverend Johnny McLoughlin.

The Vicar who married my great grandfather and great grandmother was Chas. Waring (or similar name) in 1874 at "The Parish Church in the Parish of Eglish" according to their wedding certificate. Does anyone know if the vicar at Holy Trinity/Drumsallan Church had a vicar at that time by that name? Or any other possible church? Thanks, Thelma

You could also try St Columba, Church of Ireland, Derrygortrevy.
I don't know how long you're going to be here but the Eglish Church of Ireland records are on microfiche at the Public Records Office [PRONI] in Belfast - they're definitely one of the better compilations of records available as they have births, deaths and marriages.
To see if C Waring was Vicar of Holy Trinity at that time you could try the Irish Studies Library, Abbey Street, Armagh. They have a selection of books which have the history of the various Ministers with their Churches and the dates they were there.
