Thomas Stephenson (b. 1770, d 1852) of Loughgilly took his wife, Anne, recently widowed daughter-in-law and 6 grandchildren to Stormont Co, Ontario, Canada in about 1826.  He was active in the Orange Order, and belonged to the Church of Ireland.  I'd love to know more about him and his siblings,

Julie.

  • I notice you have posted this enquiry under Eglish parish, but it seems to relate to Loughgilly, which is a separate parish in its own right.

There?s a copy of the Loughgilly Church of Ireland parish records held at PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. They start in 1804, so you may just be able to find the baptisms of the children, and more probably the grandchildren. If the family in fact came from Eglish then there?s a copy of those records held there too. They start in 1803.

    C.I. Loughgilly (Armagh diocese) Baptisms, 1804-89; marriages, 1804-45; burials, 1808 and 1811-1932.

C.I. Eglish (Armagh diocese) Baptisms, 1803-1935, with index; marriages, 1804- 1936, with index; burials, 1803-1935, with index; confirmations, 1824-8, 1833-52 and 1894-1933, with index; preachers? book, 1836-1925; notes from vestry minutes about erection of new church, 1820-30.

Though some records for these parishes are on-line on the rootsireland site, they only start in 1845, and so to access the earlier ones you would need to visit PRONI.

It?s unlikely that you?ll find any Orange Order records from such an early period.
