HI,  I wonder if someone with local knowledge can help with a mystery I haven't been able to solve.  My husband's Grandmother was born in Sligo in 1868 and her parents were Peter McDonogh and Mary Anne McClean.  I have never been able to find a marriage cert for the parents in either civil registration documents or church records or a record of her baptism in Sligo.  The couple moved to Dublin the following year and my husbands Grandmother was baptised in Dublin on the day of her first birthday when the priest notes that she is 'about 7 months old'.  This is a little odd in itself and I had wondered if it was a mixed marriage or if in fact they never married.  Anyway,  the 1901 census has the couple  living with additional children in 2 Seville Place, Dublin and states that Mary Anne was originally from Kings Co aged 49, therefore born c 1852. This would have made her 16 years old when her daughter was born but of course this may be inaccurate.  Peter died in 1908 and the 1911 census has Mary Anne still living in Seville Place aged 57 years, therefore born 1854.  Until recently I wasn't able to find out what happened next but then found a newspaper death notice in the Irish Independent dated 17 June 1931 as follows.  'McDonogh (Birr) - June 10 1931, at the residence of her niece, Dromoyle, Birr, Kings Co. Mrs. Mary A. McDonogh, late of 2 Seville Place, Dublin. RIP.'  The death cert obtained confirms her date of death, notes she died of old age with no medical attendent and the informant was John Tooher of Dromoyle.  She has several children still alive, living in Dublin at this stage and it seems probable that the death notice was placed in order to inform her children of her death.  I am hoping someone with local knowledge could inform me of the likely cemetary that she might be buried and hope this may lead me to the identity of her niece and thereafter to the identity of her sister or brother and therefore back to her parents.  It seems possible that she was originally from this area and might have been buried there with family.  I am wondering what cemetaries are nearby and what records exist for them.  Any help you can provide would be grately appreciated.

  • Dear Claire

I am working on finding information for you.  I am waiting to contact someone who may have some informtion but am unable to contact them as yet. Meanwhile, I am wondering, if you have checked the Catholic Parish Registers which went online in July to try and find Mary Anne's baptism record.  I think she might have been baptised in Kilcolman Church as that would be the nearest Church to Dromoyle where her Aunt lived - though as her Aunt may have married in there she may not have been from the same parish.  I hope to be in touch as soon as I follow up my lead.

    Regards
