Hi

John Callaghan was born around 1805 in Rahan Cork (near Mallow) and family records suggest he married Hannah Sullivan. He had at least two sons John born around 1833 and Michael who was born around 1831ish. There is possibly another child, a daughter names Hannah / Hanorah or Ellen. I believe John Sr was most likely Catholic and his occupation was Labourer.

John Jr married Eliza Feetom (parents John Feetom a Soldier and Sarah Jane Andrews a Seamstress) in 1859 in the Church of Ireland church at Rockforest near mallow in Nov 1859. Shortly thereafter they migrated to England before heading to Australia. I have gathered a reasonable amount of information from 1861 on and it is the Irish detail I am seeking.

Michael married Anne Gallagher around the same time in the same chapel. Michael was listed as a Gardener, later a Land Steward on the Cotter Estate. Unlike John, Michael remained in Rockforest his whole life as detailed in the 1901 Census. I also found his grave in the local cemetery, buried with Anne who had died some years earlier. Michael was listed as living on the Cotter estate in retirement suggesting he spent his career there. It is possible that Michael and John both converted to Protestantism to secure jobs as records suggest Catholics outnumbered protestants by a considerable margin the parish at the time.

As John Jr migrated post marriage to England and only Michael's family remained in Rahan I am keen to try and identify Michael's living relatives or anyone who might be able to shed some light on John and Hannah Callaghan and their ancestry. I have visited the local cemeteries in the vicinity of Rahan and other than Michael, I was not successful in finding any other Callaghan's from the area. The tithe Applotment books suggest there were up to 10 Callaghan families living in Rahan at the time.

Thanks

Peter

  • Hello Peter,

I went to www.rootsireland.ie and searched for a baptismal record for John and Michael and Hannah/Hannorah /Ellen.

    I found three records ..

Michael Callaghan, father John Callaghan, mother ?? Sullivan, baptised Mallow RC 1828

Ellen Callaghan, father John Callaghan, mother ?? Sullivan,  baptised Mallow RC 1837

John Callaghan, father John Callaghan, mother ?? Sullivan, baptised Mallow RC 1838

Don't know if these are your people but you would need to see the records to know if these are brothers and sisters.  This site if free to join and it would cost about €5 to view records but less if you purchase in bulk.
