I'm looking for information about my wife's g g grandfather Thomas Kirk, dob 1 Jan 1846. His parents were William Kirk and Jennie Hamilton. William is believed to be born in Scotland, do not have a date. We don't know where or when Jennie was born.
Thomas, and possibly the entire family, immigrated to Canada before 1866. Thomas married Mary J. Patterson in Canada in 1866 and later immigrated to USA and settled in Maine.
Thanks for any assistance.

The record on FamilySearch of Thomas' death in Maine gives his place of birth as 'England' ..

Shane,
Thanks for the quick reply.
Yes, I have seen the Maine death record. That's where I get his father's Scottish birth from, but it's suspect.
To confuse things even more, the 1900 US Census shows Thomas & his wife being born in Canada. The 1871, 1881 and 1891 Canadaian Census all show Thomas being born in Ireland and his wife in Canada. Since the Canadian census were closer to his immigration I am putting more faith in those. I'm hoping to find a link to his parents, William and Mary Kirk in Ireland.
Thanks for your help.

without a detailed location in Ireland, e.g. the name of the town or parish, it's going to be difficult search. Any clues from Canadian records as to even the county in Ireland that your Thomas was born ?
I've seen instances where Canadian marriage records mention the name of the parish where the bride or groom were born - think these were RC records, dont know if that applies to your Kirk family.
p.s. that death record shows Scotland as place of birth for Jennie also - there's a 'do' for ditto.
