Hi - I have the attached emigration records for William Toole and Ellen Parlon.  They emigrated to Australia in 1842.  Note one is a typed transcription where it states that the character references are from Seirkyran.  But I am not sure it says that on the written record.  I think it could be the name of a townland called Sharavogue.

William and Ellen had children baptised at Kilcolman RC church before they emigrated.

I also note that Seirkyran is close to where I found Ellen's family on the 1821 census fragments for the townland Fortel in the parish of Birr.

any thoughts or feedback most appreciated.

regards,

Karen W.

  • Karen W, Your record of emigration did not come through. Subscription site www.rootsireland.ie has a record of a Mary Toole baptised in Kilcolman on December 2nd 1835. Parents: William Toole and Ellen Parlon. Baptismal Sponsors: Jeremiah Smith and Alice Heenan. Kate Toole - Same parents names - baptised in Kilcolman on July 2nd 1840. Baptismal Sponsors: Martin Toole and Bridget? (Surname difficult to read on church record.) 1821 census for Birr area has a Bridget Toole, Widow and family - Michael, William, Mary and Catherine. Parish recorded as Eglish. Regards,

  • Thank you Margot & McCoy, I'm so sorry the attachments did not seem to come through I will try again. Yes they are the ones that came on the Woodbridge in 1842 and yes they came with William's brother Martin and his wife Margaret Tooher (Toohey or Tew are also names used). and yes I do have the records of the children born to William and Ellen before they emigrated. My query is around the character witnesses for William and Ellen and I am trying to determine 1. the place name on the record and 2. the possiblity that Michael Parlon is Ellen's brother. I really appreciate your answers and assistance. Kind regards, Karen.

  • William Toole written emigration record. See character references - Michael Parlon and Matt Keenan. Am trying to dechiper place name next to their names. sorry - the file will not upload. It is not too big, I have tried resaving it, snipping just the relevant area and also putting it into a word document. nothing seems to work. I will have to try again later.

  • Karen, The surname "Parlon" appears to be common in the parish of Kilcolman. Griffith's valuations for 1851 has a Michael Parlon in the townland of Ballygaddy. The surname "Heenan" is also in that townland. One of the baptism sponsors for Ellen Toole was "Alice Heenan". The is a Michael Keenan in the townland of Boveen. Those records can be found for free on www.askaboutireland.ie/ |Griffith's I hope this information may help in identifying the address of Michael Parlon. Regards,

  • Michael PARLIN is listed here http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?… These are Keenan's listed in the same area. if you click into the record you will see their names this may ne Matthew's family. and I noticed a John Tooher was listed too. http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?… My Family were Tooher, if you look at the map look for Roscrea then Cloughjordan they were from a town land in between. Next to do is search the church records. Margot

  • thank you very much Margot & McCoy. The tithe applotment links were very interesting and show the townland that I thought the writing says - Shanavogue - shows up for both Parlin and Keenan. I have been trying to upload that record, but still not working. I have a Michael Parlin/Parland born 1802 - so potentially he could be the same Michael in these tithe applotments. I also see Delahunty there and I believe there is a connection to that name as well. There is a Pat Parlen and Mary Delahunty who had two children in Kilcolman Parish and then they emigrated to Australia. McCoy I have seen that Griffith's valuation and it possibly is him. the Griffiths was done quite a few years after 1842 when he was a character witness for William and Ellen. and Yes I will look at church records next to see if I can find any that might match. thank you both very much. regards, Karen. PS note Parlon / Parlan / Parlin / Parland etc. etc. are all interchangeable.

  • Where it says Choose Files choose you file THEN Upload... I found since the site was updated to do it slowly. We used to get alerts in the emails but sadly no longer. Margot OH! I just tried it the orange UPLOAD button has gone! Maybe that's why you cannot do it. Try Copy and paste the link to the document.
