I see that the church records for Shinrone baptisms only go back to 1842. I also see that the current Catholic church in Shinrone was built in 1860. Does anyone know when the prior church was built and where it was located? I'm wondering if the records only go back that far, or if the church only dated to that time, in which case I should be searching for an alternate church/parish.

  • The parish goes back quite a bit further than the 1860s - in the 1830s there were at least three Catholic Churches (or chapels as they are often listed) for the parish. The parish was usually listed as 'Shrinone & Ballingarry' or 'Shinrone and Brusna' after the locations of the chapels - Shinrone, a second near at Ballingarry and one at Brosna. The earlier chapel at Shinrone was on the same site and looks a little smaller than the 1860s church.

The Catholic parish covered three civil parishes : Shinrone, Kilmurryely, Kilcomin plus parts of Ballingarry (Lower Ormond), the remaining sections of this civil parish were covered by the adjacent Catholic Parish of 'Borrisokane and Eglish', so might be checking the records for that parish if your line lived in a townland in the western parts of Shinrone & Ballingarry parish. (Borrisokane and Eglish baptism & marriage records go back to abt 1821)

  • Thanks very much - that's great information. The problem is that I do not know. The only information I have is a birth date approx. 1828, a county of Kings (at that time), the fact that the person that recommended this person for service in the RIC was a sub inspector in Shinrone and an unfortunately very common last name of Kennedy.
