I am told that on 28 Jan 1809 Esther Goulding and Thomas Talbot Howard were married in Templeharry. (Templeharry Church of Ireland Register 1800-1911) Family lore has Esther coming from Moneygalle and Thomas from Templemore. Also after the marriage Thomas moved from Templemore to Moneygalle to be closer to the Goulding family. In 1818 they immigrated, with son James, to Canada among the Richard Talbot settler via the Brig Brunswick. Others say the first born was son named John who is not shown among the passenger list. I am wondering if there are interested folks who could offer some assistance by redirecting me to possible depositaries where additional details might be residing.

  • Hi Blair

by Irish record standards you have done very well, the Church of Ireland have commenced putting their records online where they exist but Moneygall, Co. Offaly are not yet up and it is slow. President Obama was over here some years ago and they had traced his ancestry to Moneygall in case you are unaware of illustrious neighbours.

I cannot think of any other place where you might find records at that time, in 1824 to 1837 some farmers paid tithes and they are here http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp There are Gouldings in Moneygall, Kings County as it then was and also Howard in Templemore so your family I imagine, if you are interested alsoin the 1850 there is Griffiths Valuation here http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/ I see the land owned by Gouldings in Moneygall is vacant, this site gives you a map of the area and if you can tear yourself away from the trees and spend some time you can overlay the maps wiht modern maps and have a peek with Google Streetview they tell me. See http://www.osi.ie/

I checked the online phonebook and got no gouldings or Howards in those places, 9 Howards in Tipperary and one Goulding in Offaly but not near Moneygall.

An email to the Church of Ireland might tell you when their records go up online or what they have.

Sorry for the delay but we do not appear to have a local volunteer.

    Regards

  • Forgive me for not replying sooner. I am working through a couple of eye procedures so am having trouble seeing, let alone on a PC screen. I see your note. Thanks. Back in a week or two when my sight improves. Cheers Blair

  • A hello from Canada.

I must say that I have been back to Ireland and walked the streets of Templemore and Moneygalle in September of 2016.  I experienced such strong feelings within as I stood on the property of the Templeharry Church were my 2-great grandfather/mother were married in 1809 and left in 1818. Thanks to LB (who capably assisted our efforts) and T&TMcK (our gracious hosts) for being the greatest Ambassadors for Tipperary.

Although we were not able to locate the family in or near Templemore, we had remarkable success with the Goulding connection in or near Moneygalle. We were able to uncover evidence through the Rev Minchin leases of 2-great grandmother’s father and the comment of son Charles having “gone to America and that he and a brother have not been heard from”. Charles was among Tipperary’s Richard Talbot’s Settlers as was Thomas Talbot Howard my 2-great grandfather. It would seem the leased plot of land has a connection to the row housing on Moneygalle main roadway were former President Obamas relatives themselves had once occupied and left from.

So this enjoyable hunt continues as I try to uncover the Howard/Templemore and Howard/Goulding/ Moneygalle connections mentioned in Professor Elliott’s writings on the Irish immigration to the Canadas of the time.

Much is yet to be determined so we will continue to push back in time to find the parentage of my immigrants and the identity of their siblings if any.

To anyone who may have a thought or suggestion on my “push back” I would invite and welcome your contribution.

    Thanks Ireland
