I am doing research on the Heffernan Family. My Great Grandfather was Philip Heffernan born 13 Nov 1838 in the parish of Holycross.  His father was James Heffernan and his Mother was Mary (O)Dwyer.

Siblings were Catherine born 8 April 1836, Edmund born 19 Feb 1841, Thomas born 25 Jan 1845, Patrick orn 17 Mar 1848, James born 8 May 1851, Martin born 28 May 1854. I have taked to relatives that are still living in Holycross but a lot of information has been lost over the years. Any information is always helpful.  I anyone needs genealogy help in the Davenport Iowa area let me know I am retired, and only work part time but I also do genealogy as a hobby so anything I do is for free.

  • Hi,

Once again thank you very much for your offer to share information and to help others with their own research!

I hope that someone who recognises the family makes a connection with you and helps you to further your research.

    All the best,

  • Hi Jeff

I hope you are still active on Ireland XO. Your post is only 10 years old :D  I know about a few Heffernan and Dwyer families from Tipperary but ended up in Australia in the 1800s.

Obviously there were lots of troubles in Ireland, there were a lot of people sent as convicts to Australia in the 1800s, but there were a few Heffernans and Dwyers too, actually there were Dwyers here before 1800... when Australia only started receiving convicts and settlers in 1788...  There were a few 'exiled' here with the belief they were fenians.

But the wife of one of the Heffernan's exiled here, wanted to come to the colony so she used her cousin's name - Mary Dwyer..... but the real Mary Dwyer had gone to the US... I wonder if this is the same family as yours?  I can't remember what happened to the wife, I have a feeling she was shipped out of Australia... and went to the US.... I will have to look.

If you look on TROVE, which is the Australian newspapers.... online and free.. you can search for Dwyer, Heffernan.... any name and see what comes up for you.  IF you want specifically the 'legal' info, you can narrow your search to 'Gazettes' which is where the info for prisoners, any law info, estates and probates etc, are published.

The Mrs Heffernan was caught and disclosed her real name... I think she was born a Glasheen.  But the families of Glasheen, Dwyer and Heffernan are all tied by marriage either in Tipperary or once they came to Australia.

There are a large number of Dwyers in Victoria Australia and some in South Australia too.  There are descendants on the Facebook group Tipperary Genealogy.... just come and join us and ask the questions and hopefully get some answers.  Cheers.
