I would really appreciate any assistance anyone can offer about the other members of this family.  I have hit a wall with my research.  My husband and I had the rather spooky experience of visiting the Moyaliffe cemetery when staying a couple of years ago.  I spent two hours photographing the cemetery and river without knowing my people were most likely buried there - and didn't think to look for them amongst the graves!

With the publication of the Catholic baptisms I was very excited to find a townland (Mealiffe) for my Ryan/Tynan ancestors, Michael Ryan and Margaret Tynan.  Their daughter, my GGG grandmother, was Bridget Catherine Ryan, who was born before the records start as was another brother Thomas Michael Ryan (who emigrated to Australia).  She was born around 1832 and he was born about 1828.  Fortunately other siblings made it into the records.

Name Date of Baptism Sponsor/s

Ellenora Ryan 1- 9 -1836 Timothy Tynan & Mary Ryan

Patrick Ryan 9 – 8 -1838 Patrick Dwyer & Margaret Ryan

Margaret Ryan 21-3-1840 Ml. Costelloe & Mary O’Dwyer

Judith Ryan 6 – 6 1842 Pat Ryan & Judy(?) McGrath

Edmund Ryan 24 – 2 – 1847 John and Mary Tynan.

I am hoping to find any information at all about the other members of the family.  My GGG grandmother travelled to Australia and married in Melbourne in 1857 to Lawrence O'Rourke (from Clonmel) but I cannot find when she travelled or who she came with.  Possibly she went with her brother Thomas, and possibly even the rest of the family went with her but I cannot tell.    I know that Michael appears in the Griffiths valuations.  There were Tynan families in Newton and Ballymoney I think but I cannot find where they went or if they remained.  My GGG grandparents travelled from Melbourne to Dunedin, Otago, NZ and raised their family there.  I am from Christchurch, New Zealand.

Edit

I am returning to the area next year and would very much like to find where my people lived.  I will go through the house records in Dublin first in the hope something can be revealed.

    Welcome back!

I think your townland is Moyaliff in Moyaliff parish rather than Mealiffe. Here is the 1901 census for the townland. I think there are six Ryan families. http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tipperary/Moyaliff/Moyalif…  Maybe you can match the siblings you know about with the head of households in 1901.

  • Hello Roger, thanks for that.  I see there is a John Ryan at number 14 Moyaliffe household.  He is 70 so is before the parish records start - but his eldest children are Michael and Margaret!  That could very well be a sibling to my Bridget Catherine Ryan - and if so that is very exciting.  Gosh!  Now to try and track down their children etc.  Not sure how to go about that but it is a great clue.  I appreciate that very much.

    kind regards

  • Kerry:

Other than the 1911 census there are not many records available and searching BMD index records is problematic because the surname Ryan is so common.

  • Yes - seems to be my major problem with a few of my people.  However, I may have some luck with the house records in Dublin?  Next year I will be back to plunder anything I can find.  Are there any electoral rolls or similar?

  • RootsIreland.ie   Has changed its usage, in 2016. from a credit based system of searching which was very expensive unless you knew who you were looking for.  It is now subscription based and carries almost all the parish records - except Dublin and the far SW of Ireland.  The new subscription basis means you can do endless searches within the subscription now.  It has been invaluable to my research BuT the records only start in the early 1800s for most parishes.

  • Thank you.

I am back in Ireland now and headed to the Moyaliff area in about a week.  Hoping I might find something or someone to further my research.

Currently staying with cousins in Galway and off to Cork for the O'Driscoll clan reunion.

Moyaliffe church itself has a graveyard so do not just restrict yourself to Ballycahill.   There is also Tempebeg and Kilvalure and Upperchurch graveyards.  Although I was in Upperchurch about a year ago and it was full of Ryan's so i wish you luck.

In fact I can share a map of Upperchurch and Drumbane Parish with you.   In the South East at the bottom you will see Moyaliffe.

  • Hi. How did you get on with your search. My mother is a Ryan from Moyaliffe. Her brother, Con Ryan still live in Moyaliffe too. Their mother was a Kennedy from Shanballyduff. I live in NZ too, but in Auckland. It would be very cool to see if we are related at all.
