  • Hi Eileen,

I searched on www.rootsireland.ie and found a marriage of a Laurence Ryan to Ellen Stapleton in Tipperary in 1839.

It is a pay site so I didn't get the details; the records cost about $5 each.

If this is the correct record it would give you the parish of the marriage.

I searched for James Ryan born 1845-52 parents Denis Ryan and Ellen Stapleton and got a baptism in Tipperary in 1848.

I found two listings (probably the same one) of a baptism of Denis Ryan in Tipperary in 1815 - this will give you the parish and his parents.

There is also a baptism record for Laurence Ryan in Tipperary 1815!

I hope you find some of this useful.

    Best regards

  • Thank you I will look at this to see. I thhink the information on James fits the time line of dates I have. Not sure about Laurence Ryan unless he changed his name or used a middle name. Everything I have found says Denis Ryan.

  • The Holycross parish records only begin from 1835/ so if Denis and Ellen werer married before then there will be no record. The existing parish records are available on the pay site www.rootsireland.ie and until the 13th October are at a reduced rate.

  • Just checked the rootsireland.ie site and there are only three baptisms showing for children of Denis Ryan and Ellen Stapleton Winifred 1844 James 1848 and Michael 1850- To view the actual records and see if there is any additional information  you would have to buy credits.

  • I am looking for any information on Michael E. Power born August 15 1852, in Holy Cross.  He came here to New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, married Mary Ann Gaynor and died December 10, 1904.  My family and I are planning a trip to Ireland in late March and would love to come to Holy Cross to meet distant relatives.  Also, I would like to visit the local catholic church.  Thank you.

  • The Holycross R.c. parish records are online at www.rootsireland.ie but I was unable to find a baptismal record for Michael Power there. Do you have any more information e.g. parents names etc.

Re the church The Abbey has been restored and is now the parish church- however the church used in the 1850's is now a community centre I think - it is very near the Abbey.

There is a community website for Holycross Ballycahill Parish

    www.holycrossballycahill.com

It might be helpful to have alook at it.

  • Eileen:  My G G granddather, Denis Ryan (born < 1800, d<1852) lived in Cormackstown - just down the road from Farneybridge.   {His agnomen was "Barney" meaning his father or grandfather was a "Barney" or "Bernard").  [Family history says he had brothers: Barney, Thomas, and Denis.]  He was married to Mary Gleason.  His sons were: Bernard (b~1800-1820); James Xavier Ryan (Barney) (b~1822, d-1878) - my great grandfather; Timothy b~1830; and Michael b-?.  I have no information about any daughters of Denis.

Given Irish naming patterns; and the same (albeit commoon) given names of Denis, James, and Michael; it is quite possible that my Denis was a grandfather, father, or uncle, of your Denis (born 1815).  My Ryans, emmigrated to Newport, KY and/or St. Louis, MO during the famine.  My father had aunts & uncles named: Dennis, Elizabeth, John, Johanna, Margaret, Michael, and Joseph.  Finally, there was a related branch of my Ryan family in St. Louis headed by James and Margaret Ryan (both born about 1844), although their exact relationship to my great grandfather is not known.
