Ireland Reaching Out - www.irelandxo.comHas the Lough Gur Historical Society or similar indexed the old graveyard in the Knockainey and Lough Gur Parishes? I visited the old graveyard in Patrickswell in 1988 and the Late Tom Dineen  R.I.P. had anecdotal information which I can share regarding the Dineen grave. The Late Dr Chris O'Mahony of Limerick Archives did some marvelous work in tracing the Dineens of Patrickswell-Knockderk Knockainey Parish in the late 1980s and early 1990s. I wonder if his then able assistant Mary O'Grady Pyne is still living in Limerick, I would love to meet her again during the Week of Welcomes this year.

  • Thanks again Mike, I'll need to purchase some of those Lough Gur Journals from the Lough Gur Historical Society. I will try to join as a member. When I had the Dineen research done by the Late Dr Chris O'Mahony in the late 80s early 90s, it was Mid-West Archives situated at the Granary, Lim.They were closed down after Limerick Council withdrew funding in the early 1990s and Chris died a couple of years later. Nice to know that Limerick Ancestry has continued the great work of Chris O'Mahony, he was in my opinion the best researcher in Ireland.

  • Hi Des,

I have included below the bruff graveyard as i know you have a particular interest in this area. I have no  references on the indexing for section 3 & 4 of the graveyard, yet.

Bruff: (Ss.Peter and Paul's Cemetery Bruff)

    Section 2-LGDJ 2004 No. 13 p.96 - 105.

Section 1 is recorded in LGDJ 2002 No.12. I have no page reference.

  • Mike (and Des),

I am so happy to see this message thread.  A few years ago I finally was able to trace my ancestors back to Knockainey and Patrickswell.  I've tried to find the LGDJ, but to no avail.  I live in the States (Iowa) and have tried writing to various places in Limerick, but haven't had any responses.  I suspect the difficulty was that one heritage center closed down and another hadn't taken on the work.  Anyway, I would love to become a member --and would like to purchase the back issues that have gravestone information.  Can you provide contact info?

    Thanks,

    Kathy

  • Hi,

I am new to this site and would like to add a comment.

I am researchng my husbands family they are Bridget and Thomas RYAN brother and sister who arrived in Melbourne Australia 1852.

Bridget was already married to a Michael CANNY

On Thomas RYAN's marriage to Ann O'Donohue in 1857 it had that he was a widower from KNockainey, Limerick, Ireland and that his parents were John RYAN and Anne (nee CUNNINGHAM)

I would love any information on his parents thankyou

  • Hi Judi

Thanks for your message. We will check the records available here and get back to you.

I wonder if you would post the message again as a new post, with the title Ryans of Knockainey? That way you might get more traffic, as the title would stand out on the message board, rather than just as a message on another thread.

    Many thanks

  • Judi.

We have looked at the church records for Knockainey Patrickswell.

    Births-

Bridget b.07/02/1834 Parents John Ryan and Ann Cunningham. Sponsors-- Michael Cunningham and Bridget Cunningham

Thomas b. 19/11/1828 Sponsors Garrett Punch and Mary Punch

There was another birth registered to that couple---

John b.19/11/1823 Sponsors James Rourke and Catherine Cunningham

Land records provide the following information:

    Griffiths Valuation 1851 gives:

John Ryan, Knockainey West- house and garden annual valuation total 13 shillings.

Ann Ryan, Knockainey West - house and garden annual valuation total 7 shillings

John Ryan Knockainey village- house valuation total 17 shillings

As regards a marriage for Thomas Ryan in Knockainey --

Thomas Ryan married Mary Woods in 1848

Thomas Ryan married Ellen Leddin in 1850.

However, it was common practice for marriages to take place in the parish of the bride, so perhaps Thomas married another lady elsewhere.

We have one of the graveyards here documented. While there are several Ryan burials there, there isn't any John and Ann Cunningham. The other graveyard in Knockainey is undocumented, but we will walk there as soon as possible to see if that grave is there.

Please look at www.historicgraves.ie for further information. Also, if you could re-post your original query under Ryans of Knockainey that would be great.

    Regards

    Mary
