Hello,

I am researching my ancestors, the Farrells, who were from Ballydonagh, Parish of Dunkerrin, Templeharry, Kings County. Records also indicate Barna as their hometown. I would appreciate any Irish info/history on the areas in Ireland and/or any potential info/leads regarding any of these family members from anyone who thinks they may have a potential match as they could have ended up anywhere in the world!

My GGG grandparents were TIMOTHY FARRELL and MARGARET ROURK of Ballydonagh. They were listed as married in the Moneygall/Barna/Dunkerrin United R.C. Parish registers on January 24, 1820. Witnesses were GE Dillon Esq. and Patrick Rork. No indications that they ever left Ireland and Timothy listed in 1851 Griffith Valuation. I wonder if they were buried somewhere in vicinity. They had the following children, listed as living in Ballydonagh when baptised

JOHN FARRELL bpt Dec 8 1820 - not sure where he ended up and if he came to Canada with brother..there were a few John Farrells in the area that my Patrick ended up and unable to positively id any as this John Farrell yet.

PATRICK FARRELL bpt Mar 2 1822 - this is my GGGrandfather who came to Hastings County, Ontario, Canada in 1842. When he died in 1922 it listed his home in Ireland as Barna (which I think may be a bit of distance from Ballydonagh?). There are many descendants across Canada and the USA from Patrick Farrell's line.

MICHAEL FARRELL bpt Oct 15 1824 - pretty sure that he followed brother Patrick to Canada, still looking for concrete evidence.

JAMES FARRELL bpt July 22 1827 - not sure where he ended up

HANNA FARRELL bpt March 22, 1829 - She married John Maher Aug 28 1853 and they emmigrated to Australia, where there are now many descandants.

I believe that TIMOTHY FARRELL had a brother also living in Ballydonagh at the time of baptisms, a WILLIAM FARRELL born c1787, who was married to MARY WHELAN. They were eventually in the same area in Ontario, Canada as my Patrick Farrell. They had the following children baptised in the Moneygall/BARNA/Dunkerrin United R.C. Parish registers and all listed them as residing in Ballydonagh when baptised.

Mary Farrell bpt Feb 25 1821 - she married and lived in same area in Canada as my Patrick Farrell.

William Farrell bpt Feb 19 1823

Joseph Farrell bpt Dec 19 1825

Martin Farrell bpt April 7? 1828

William and Mary had more children and most likely the others were born before 1820 when the Parish records began. The other children were

Patrick Farrell b-c1816 - lived in Ontario, Canada

John Farrell b-c1819-lived in same area as my Patrick in Ontario Canada. On death cert he listed as from Barna,Kings County.

William Farrells son's marriage certifcate states that William and Mary were from Barna, Kings County, Ireland.

One last note, the 1911 Census of Ireland for Ballydonagh lists a REEVES family who took in a relative, nephew, JOHN FARRELL, who was 6 years old and born in ENGLAND! Some of the Farrells from this area may have also made their way there! There is also a Daniel Farrell age 4 who is listed and living with the RYANS, but they have him listed as from Kings County. They may have been Farrell orphans.

Looking forward to hearing from anyone that can help put the Farrell puzzle together! :-)

  • Hello, Sue, I hope you receive this message.  I just saw your post from September 2012.  I am a descendant of JAMES FARRELL, born 1826-1827 to TIMOTHY FARRELL and MARGARET ROURKE/RORKE in Kings County (Offaly), Ireland.  James Farrell immigrated the U. S. between 1840 - 1850.  He married Anne McCue on 20 Jan1852 in New Orleans, LA.  Anne was the daughter of Edward McCue of Queens County, Ireland.  I am still researching her mother, who I believe is Margaret McDonald.  Edward had another daughter named Bridget, but I get the impression from my research that she was the step-sister of Anne.  James Farrell and Anne McCue Farrell had seven children, all born in New Orleans:  Eliza 1852 - ?  Julia A. "Lulu"  1853 - 1943 James E. 1857 - 1917  William J. 1860 - 1924  John J. "Jack" - abt 1861 - 1903 (My ancestor)  Mary  abt. 1865 - abt 1880  Charles J. 1870 - 1900

If you are interested in exchanging information, please contact me.  Hope to hear from you.
