I've been researching my Hogan ancestors for a while now and have hit a brick wall in the mid 1800s.

My Gt Grandmother Catherine Hogan (1895-1964) moved from Tullamore to Manchester where she married my Gt Grandfather Charles Henry Dillon.

Catherine's parents were Thomas Hogan (born about 1868) and Anne Kelly (born about 1866). Thomas's father was a Patrick Hogan and he is my brick wall.

In both the 1901 and 1911 census the Hogan's address was given as Pensioners Row, Tullamore, King's County, Ireland.

I've used RootsIreland, censuses and FindMyPast but have been unable to get any further back and if any one could give me some advice I'd be very grateful.

I would also be very interested to know if there any Hogans in Tullamore who may be relatives?

  • I have posted your message on County Offaly Genealogy page on Facebook and on Tullamore History page on Facebook, maybe it might ring a bell with someone.

  • Thank you very much, that's a good idea I'd not thought of. My Grandfather remembered staying with the Hogans over the Summer when he was a child in what must have been the 30s and 40s so hopefully there are still some Hogans in the area.

I'll join those Facebook groups so that I can keep an eye out for any replies.

  • Could you possibly give me a link to the Tullamore Facebook page? I've found the Offally one but not the page for Tullamore.

There is also a closed group on Facebook - County Offaly Genealogy - https://www.facebook.com/groups/CountyOffalyGenealogy/

Hope you have great success. Let us know how you get on.

PS Have you looked at the Tullamore Town Directory - http://www.yourtowndirectory.org/Tullamore.html

PPS Also The National Library of Ireland have all the parish records available to browse.  It is very time consuming but can be very rewarding.

  • Thanks for the links, I had a look through the parish records on RootsIreland a few months ago and hit a brick wall with Thomas Hogan's (b. 1868) Father Patrick. I heard that FMP are transcribing the parish records so when those go online I'll have another go.
