Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
The RC records for Maryborough/Portlaoise start in 1826 but unfortunately they are not on Roots Ireland. Here is the link to the parish register. I would search for John's baptismal record and possibly records for siblings.http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0714
I also checked the 1850 Griffiths Valuation and found a record for a Edmund Haslam in Ballycarnan townland in Kilcolmanbane parish which relates to Maryborough RC parish so this is likely where your Haslam's come from.

I also checked the 1901 census for Ballycarnan and there was one Haslan family in the townland.
