My Gr Gr Grandfather was Martin Mahers. He came from Horseleap and was born sometime after 1820. He left Ireland and came to live in Cardiff S Wales. I think he had a brother John. He was married to Eliza O'Leary from Cork and their eldest son John was born in Cork in about 1854. I would love to receive confirmation of Martin's birth. The family are Roman Catholic. Thank you for any information.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Unfortunately according to the parish register http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0916  baptismal records for this parish do not start until 1845 which is too late for your interests. I checked the the 1853 Griffiths records for this parish in both Offaly and Westmeath and did not see a Maher or Mahers record.

  • Hello Roger, Thanks for the reply. It's a shame the registers are not available for the dates I need. Anyway thank you very much for trying.

  •   Hello again,

I am still having no luck tracing my relative Martin Mahers, sometimes called Smith, who was born in Horseleap in about 1820. I know baptismal records are not available until 1845 but wonder if there is evidence of a family with this name in the area. i am presuming that when my ancestor came to Cardiff he left parents and siblings behind.Kind regards Monica Maddox

  • Monica:

No Maher or Mahers records in the 1853 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for the parish but three Smyth records.

  • Thanks again Roger. I'm sorry to be a nuisance. They must be there somewhere, Horseleap is such a little place . I'll take a look at the Smyth suggestion. Regards Monica.
