Hi, I'm interested in the Furlong family of Shruagh, Tullamore. My ancestor, Bridget Furlong, came from there and her parents were Martin Furlong and Margaret Sta(u)nton. I believe some of this family were excellent Gaelic Football players. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who can add information or who are related to this family. My ancestor, Bridget Furlong later Sherry and McSharry, emigrated to Australia with her husband James Sherry and their family. Thanks.

Hi Cass
I assume you have this record - this one's from www.rootsireland.ie/:
Name:Bridget FurlongDate of Birth:29-Dec-1840
Date of Baptism:cordReNoAddress:
Parish/District:TullamoreGender:
CountyCo. Offaly
Denomination:
Father:Martin FurlongMother:Margaret StauntonI could only find 2 siblings: Mary 1836 & John 1838
I couldn't find the parents' marriage record in any county I'm afraid.
findmypast.ie/ (credit required) has 85,742 newspaper articles on Furlongs from Tullamore so maybe there's a football clipping or two there.
There is also a Furlong in Tullamore, Offaly in the Irish phone book so it might be worth dropping him a line (I can't send details on this site)
There are 2 Furlongs in the Tithe Applotments in King's:
SurnameForenameTownland/StreetParishCountyYear
Furlong Peter Clonygowan Ballykean King's1825-1828
Furlong Ferlane Wheery King's1830

There are lots of Furlong's living in Tullamore at present and indeed Martin Furlong was a great Offaly footballer in the 1970's and 1980's.
