I am Marié Claassen de Vries from South Africa, a descendant of DR. Geoffrey O'Connell circa 1760-1817.
Since 1995 I am researching our family history. Dr Geoffrey married Elizabeth Ross 1803. Their three children Michael 1804, John 1811 and Elizabeth 1813 were born at HILLGROVE near CAHIRCIVEEN, the home of JOHN PRIMROSE and HONORA O'CONNELL. After Dr Geoffrey's death circa 1817, Elizabeth remarried Charles Eager and they emigrated to SOUTH AFRICA Circa 1819/1820.
I now found some exciting information that the O'CONNELLS lived at RIVERTON, ST. FINIAN'S BAY, west of Carhirciveen and that DR CHARLES FITPHILLIP O'CONNELL b 1732 and ALICIA O'CONNELL b 1731-1790 had the following children of which our DR GEOFFREY was possibly one: Elizabeth (Mary) O'Connell m EAGER, GEOFFREY m ELIZABETH ROSS, John Charles, Alicia, HONORA m JOHN PRIMROSE and LT.GEN. MAURICE CHARLES 1768 -1814 who became GOVENOR OF NEW SOUTH WALES. The aforementioned children were born at RIVERTON, ST. FINIAN'S BAY.
Another interesting fact is that LT.GEN. MAURICE CHARLES also named his Estate in Australia, RIVERTON, which could possibly mean that his Estate were named after their birthplace, RIVERTON and that they grew up in ST. FINIAN'S BAY. (Possibly an Estate as I was unable to find a town called Riverton) Another interesting fact that I found : In the ORDINANCE SURVEY (GRIFFITHS) census IN 185O's BALLYNAHOW is listed as being in KILLEMLAGH PARISH but in an earlier CENSUS commissioned by DANIEL O'CONNELL M.P. in 1835 the corresponding townland in KILLEMLAGH PARISH is named RIVERTON.
I would appreciate any information, comments or corrections on the O'Connells of RIVERTON, ST. FINIAN'S BAY, KERRY. Thank you. Marié
