John Doherty was born in Moville, Donegal in 1813 to John Dogherty and Bridget Dogherty, nee Breslin. He moved to Callan, Kilkenny sometime before 1839. On the 4th February that year he married Judith Purcell the daughter of Patrick Purcell. In that same year their eldest child, Martin, was born. Judith has five more children, James in 1841 followed by Mary in 1843, Thomas in 1844, Catherine in 1845 and John in 1852. Only three children survive infancy; Martin, James and John.
According to Martin's baptismal certificate the family live on Mill Street. They move to 69 Green Street, Callan South sometime before Catherine's birth. According to the Primary Valuation of Tenements of 1850 a second allotment, 70 Green Street, is also leased by John.
In 1856 the family emigrate to South Australia. On the 8th October 1856 the 'Marion' with John, Judith, Martin and James set sail from Plymouth bound for South Australia. It docks at Part Adelaide on the 19th January 1857. Within a few years of arriving in Adelaide John, Judith (now known as Julia) together with their two youngest sons James and John relocate to Melbourne, Victoria.
Sadly for Judith/Julia the move to Australia did not have a happy outcome. By 1861 she is a patient in the Kew Asylum. Her case notes state that she suffered from chronic mania. She remained in the asylum until her death in 1880. In 1861 James begins his teaching career with the Victorian Education Department.
John,a labourer, divided his time between South Australia where his eldest son, Martin, is well established and Victoria. In the final years of his life John lived with his younest son, John, in Burramine, Victoria.
