John Hageney, died  6 November 1901 in New York City.  His U.S. census records reflect his birth year as about 1836; his gravesite reflects his birth year at 1832. Updated findings from recorded baptisms within the records of the Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly reflect the spelling of his name as Hageney in the townland of Balleyvistea and his baptism date as 12 Jan 1829.  His parents are Patrick Hageney and Catharine Grady.  I was also able to find a baptism record for his sister, Mary, but they've spelled their last names as "Heagney" in that record.

  • John's name is spelled Hagney and Hageny in U.S.  The gravestone in NYC reflects that he was from Parish Emly, County Tipperary.  I believe his parents were Patrick and Catherine Grady.  The baptismal records may need to be rechecked because I have been informed that the name was spelled as "Hagney."

  • In 1834, a Terence Hageney of Ballyvistea was recorded in the Tithe Applotment (tax records) with a holding of 3 Irish Acres  http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/reels/tab//004587439/004587439_00429.pdf

By the time of Griffith's Valuation in 1853, no Hageney/ Haigney/ Hagney was recorded in Ballyvistea. The only family recorded in Tipperary South was Heagney of Bredagh in the civil parish of Lorrha.

Hagney sometimes appeared in the early church records here as Hackney or Hegney. (In 1798, an Andrew Hagney was recorded as a godparent in St. Mary's Clonmel).

  • Thank you ever so much for this!  I am learning how to read these but I have to admit, I'm not a great student!  :(.   I believe Terrence Hageney was an Uncle to my ancestor, John Hageney and brother to John's father, Patrick Hageney.  This may give me more clues as to what my ancestors did while in Ireland.  Thanks ever so much!
