Husband James Gilmore/Gilmour was born abt. 1803.  His wife Martha Matildah Smith was born 1807.  Together they had nine children, James (born 1828), Anne(born 1830), John ( born 12/24/1831), Eliza (born 2/29/1834), William (born 3/14/1836), Catherine (born 4/17/1838), Isabelle (born 12/5/1842), Frances (born 8/1/1844), and Thomas (born 5/3/1847).  James died of a fever around 1847 near Omagh so we have been told.  Martha and the children sailed for America then, the two older leaving in 1847, and the others in 1848.  The Gilmore family shows up living in townland of Knockaravin in 1836.  If anyone would have information on them, where they lived, where James is buried, we would be thrilled.  We are visiting the area in late August to do some research.    Daryl & Kathy Gilmore

  • Hi

I am the great grandson of Sarah Gilmour (1844-1915) from Knockaraven County Tyrone.  She was daughter of John Gilmour born c.1819.  I would be interested in comparing notes.

  • Great to have a contact! James Gilmore born abt 1803 married Martha Matilda Smith.  They had nine chldren- James born 1828, Ann born 1830, John ( husbands gr grandfather) born Dec 1831, Eliza born 1832, William boen 1836, Katherine born 1838, Isabelle born 1840, Frances born Sept 1845, and Thomas born May 1847.  James the husband died approximately 1845 of typhus. The family was attending the Dromore Presbyterian church in 1830. Another listing of the family is in Oghill, County Tyrone.  Most of children were born around Omagh.  Two oldest children came to America in 1847. The mother and rest of children came in 1848.  I could not find any information on James born 1803 or Matildah's family, so if your John would be a brother of James that would be my needle in a haystack.  Please let me now if there is any connection.  They were also from Knockaraven, County Tyrone and we visited a Gilmore farm that was within 2 miles of there, if it wasn't the actual farm of ancestors.

  • Sorry for not replying sooner but I have been away on holiday.  I have two separate connections to the Gilmores from Dromore County Tyrone.  One family was Church of Ireland and were from Dromore, Tyrone.  My great great grandmother was Sarah Gilmore (1842-1915) who married Robert Liggett on 11 May 1866 at Dromore.  She had one brother John (Married to Kate Thompson) and two sisters, Ann (married to Christopher Crow) and Mary (married to Adam Whits). Her father was John Gilmore (born c.1819) and his father was Robert Gilmore (born c.1800).  John had a brother called James (Born c.1820) who was married to a Martha Bradley.  They had four children (Jane, Rebecca, John and Thomas). I have visited the old church (Church of Ireland) in Dromore where this family were christened, married and are buried.

My second connections are to a different Gilmore family from Dromore, County Tyrone and I think they might be connected to your line because of the religion they followed. My great grandfather Robert John Liggett (Sarah Liggett's son) was married three times.  His second wife was Mary Patterson (Daughter of James Patterson and Matilda Gilmore) who was also from Dromore Tyrone.  That Gilmore family were Presbyterian and her father, William is described as a small farmer from Drumnagross townland in their marriage certificate.

  • Hello Michael,

I’m a descendant of McGraths that lived in Dromore. My gr gr gr grandfather was the blacksmith for Gilmour’s forge in Main Street. The forge was in the proximity of the credit union on Main Street, and the McGrath house was on the site of the Central Hotel. Do you know anything of this, or anything about my McGrath family.    Kind Regards, Beth Tierney (née McGrath)

  • Hello!  I am tracing the family line of James Patterson and Matilda Gilmore. I am actually researching the Patterson side - wondering if you have any more information on the family? Yes, they were Presbyterians from Dromore, Tyrone. I believe that James was the brother of my GG Grandfather Alexander, born 1839, but am still trying to prove that :).  Sons of WIlliam of Aughnamoe Townland.  I am so excited to make this connection! Thanks Michael for conecting some dots - any other info greatly appreciated!

  • Hello

I have a Mary GILMORE/GILMOUR that I am connected to, but haven't found her parents although Family Search has her father as John GILMOUR but no mother?

I know she married Andrew Thomas STUART - I think around 1840 in Ireland.

They came to Williamstown, Victoria, Australia Oct 1840 aboard the "London".

In time they went to Tasmania where Andrew became a Convict Prison Superintendent.

There is a grave stone in the Cornelian Bay Cemetery, Hobart, Tasmania that states Mary died 13 March 1906 aged 82.

    So born around1824?

I know Andrew T. STUART was born 1814 at Lisdhu House, Dungannon, County Tyrone. His parents being Andrew Godfrey STUART and Sophia Isabella CONYMNGHAM.

Their first child, Andrew Godfrey STUART who is my g.g. grandfather, was born 1841 in Melbourne, Australia but after his marriage came to New Zealand.

Does this Mary Gilmour or John Gilmour connect to any one??

    Thanks, Rose
