Mary Lalor, who was living in Vicar Street, Kilkenny, at the time of her wedding, married Richard Dunne on the 7th May 1883 in Kilkenny, the witnesses were Stephen Lalor and Ellen Branigan. [An Ellen Brannigan was one of the sponsors of Pierce Lalor at his baptism]. Mary & Richard had a shop in Vicar Street and Richard worked as a cooper. By 1911 they had had eight children of whom only five were still alive at the time of the Census. The children named in the Census were Stephen aged 23, Peter aged 20, both coopers, and Elizabeth aged 11. Stephen was actually in Dublin on the night of the census and was also entered there in the house of his brother Patrick, a clerk in the Second Division (Civil Service), Accounts Branch, General Post Office, Dublin. (Interestingly, the Dublin Dunne’s Census form is filled in to a good extent in Irish).
According to Peadar, she died in 1947.
Gabriel wrote of her to Peadar on 9th March, 1947,
“She must have been ninety at least. It is a good sign for us, that is if heridary means anything. She was really a remarkable woman. There she was, married to a coper, and one who couldn’t think of any thing but the nine first fridays, with a family of five. One could think that she would be doing all right if she had given everyone of them a trade, instead of which they are all damn comfortable. It took doing, and it took plenty of ability. Look at Ciss’s marriage with Paddy Mulloy. Just think of the competition that had to be faced to get him. As I said, she was a remarkable woman.”
