Thomas Higgins was born in 1807, and lived in the townland of Bellacagher in County Roscommon with his wife Mary Gannon Higgins. His parents were James and Nancy (his cousin), but beyond that, I know nothing more about his parents. Thomas emmigrated to the United States in 1850, and his wife and five children (one of whom was my great-grandfather Henry) followed three years later. He first settled in Monmouth County, New Jersey, and in 1864 moved his family to Sterling, in Whiteside County, Illinois.
