Ellen was born in India (or the West Indies) where her father, Patrick, was a soldier. She married John Hinch on the 13 August 1878, in Clonegal. John was farming in Ballylower at this time and Ellen lived in Sherwood.
She gave birth to 10 children between 1880 and 1898. The first four were born in Carlow and then the family moved to Co. Limerick, where the remaining were born. Two of the children died young and there is no record of their names. The others, in descending order, were: Jane (13.8.1880); James (1882); Mary Elizabeth, known as Mollie (1884); Julia Magdalene (1889); unnamed son (1.3.1892); John, known as Jack (1893/94); Catherine (1894); George (1896); Henry (July/August 1898).
The family moved several times due to John Hinch’s job as a land steward. They lived in Limerick, Galway and Clare.
