Catherine Collins 1888

Back to List

Catherine Collins was born on October 20, 1888 in Leatra, Williamstown, Co. Galway to Michael Collins and Mary Connelly. She was the sixth of ten children and the fourth daughter.

She attended the Leatra National School which was built on land provided by her father.

In 1905 she came to Boston where she was working as a servant in the 1910 Census. She somehow made it to California to be a nurse for a doctor before 1914. In 1914 she married the doctor, James C. Negley. On her marriage license she changed her name to Catherine Constance Collins, changed her birthdate, birthplace (New York) and her father's name (J.C. Collins). However, she maintained communication with at least one brother and his wife throughout her life and saw to it that her grandsons were named after two of her brothers.

Catherine died 19 Apr 1959 in Los Angeles, California.  Her daughter and daughter-in-law travelled to Ireland in 1986 and met family and saw the house in which Catherine was born (her sister-in-law still lived there in 1986.)

  • Was there a James or Bridget Collins in your family from the same parish? Most of my family were born and raised in the 1800's through today. We are Finnegan's but there was a James Collins born in 1810 who married Catherine Bourke in 1843. They had a child Bridget Collins (born 2 years later in 1845) who married my great grand father Thomas Finnegan in Williamstown, Galway. I think whe died in 1929 and is burried in Athenry, Galway.

Let me know. I live in Alamo, CA, born in Boston, MA and was adopted in 1946 when my name was changed from Finnegan to Noel. My e-mail is jnoel4111@aol.com

  • It's possible that James is the son of Francis Collins, my Catherine's grandfather. The sons that I know of were Thomas born 1814, Patrick 1817 and John 1823. The parish is called Templetogher and the records are available but only go to about 1855. What is the date of Bridget and Thomas' marriage, perhaps this record can be found. Is there any record that assocites them with "Leatra" (or Leitra or variations)? This is the place that Francis lived and a connection there would strongly link your James to him. If I find any data on them I will let you know. As an aside, I used to live in San Francisco but now in Portland. Small world!

  • Let me help. We are on the right track in so many ways.

#1) Thomas Finnegan married bridget Collins on 24 Feb 1868 (her father was James Collins who was married to Catherine Bourke)

#2) They had 7 children: Thomas E. Finnegan (my grandfather); John, Patrick, Sabina, Mary Margaret and Ellen.

#3) My father, Joseph J. Finnegan was one of Thomas E. Finnegan's children the other was Helen Finnegan who died in San Francisco. I have met her grand daughter who lives in Half Moon Bay, CA.

#4) I was born James Wright Finnegan in Boston, MA. Name changed to Noel when I was adopted since my dad died at an early age (I was 6 months old). I now live in Alamo, CA just east of San Francisco and have a son living in Hillsboro, Oregon near you with his wife Amber and son Ulysses. He had his name changed back to the family name.

We wil be in the Portland area this January visiting my son's family. Maybe we can connect? I wish I could attahc an article I wrote in two Galway newpapers after our trip their last fall.. My e-mail is jnoel4111@aol.com
