Joseph McArdle (1851-1932), was the third child born to Lawrence and Rebecca McArdle. Joseph had 10 other siblings: Edward, Peter, Eliza, John, Rebecca, Laurence, Catherine, Maria Anna, Mary and Edward. Joseph is buried at Mount Calvary Cemetery, White Plains NY.
A US passport application filed in 1920 showed he was born September 14, 1851 and sailed from Liverpool to the US in 1871. Joseph was only 5’2” in 1920, aged 69, had blue eyes, a small nose, gray hair and a ruddy complexion. His ears stuck out slightly from his head.
We found a record of him in the 1910 Census reporting as a coachman for a private family in Harrison Township, Westchester County. Joseph reported as single and lived on Hyland Avenue in the 1910 Census. Apparently, he never married. Joseph's will of October, 1922, stipulated that Mary McGunn who resided at 534 Locust Avenue, Village of Port Chester, be the beneficiary; the executor was Daniel E. Kelly.
In the 1930 US Census, we found him living with his niece, Rebecca Mowbray nee McArdle, and his brother Edward H. McArdle, at the Mowbray household on Hunt Place in White Plains. Rebecca, the niece, arrived in 1907 reportedly to visit her Aunt Catherine Wogan. Rebecca was born March 8, 1886 in Monastery to John McArdle and Bridget McArdle nee Butler. John and Bridget married on November 23, 1879 and John’s sister Rebecca (who was born in 1857), was a witness to the marriage. His sister, Rebecca, likely left for Manchester shortly after the wedding in 1879.
