Mary McMahon was born approx 1831 in County Clare. Kilmaley is not confirmed but only a possibility. Her father was John McMahon and mother was Mary Jordan (spelling may differ). We don't know any information on her life before she came to Australia in approx 1852.

She married Patrick Thomas Moran in Maitland NSW 18-08-1855. Patrick Moran was sent as a convict from Gort, Galway with his brother Michael Moran in 1832, on the ship Eliza.

They went onto to have Michael ( my GGgrandfather) 1856-1931, Mary 1857-1936, John Thomas 1859-1930,Patrick Dennis 1862-1918,Margaret Ellen 1865-1897,William James 1868-1935,Winifred 1870-1946.

They moved to Tatham NSW around 1880 and farmed in the district.

Patrick Thomas Moran died 28-05-1890.

Mary McMahon (Moran) died 7-12-1902 and is buried in Casino NSW. They never returned to Ireland.

I enjoyed reading about Mary McMahon, and as I did read about her, it struck me that it shared some similarities with my great, great grandmother Mary Anne Sullivan 1821, from County Cork who at 16 ended up in Melbourne, Australia, by herself and sought company with a convict named Samuel Butler. They had a child together before marriage, but ended up married. In the end, he was quite a successful businessman.

I noted that Mary ended up on a farm, and I would hope that the last years of her life were happy ones with children and grandchildren.

Thank you Carol, it is my privilege to find out about my ancestors. Mary lived a full life and by her obituary was well loved and respected in her community.

OBITUARY.

The "Grim Reaper" has been busy again within the past week, and two well-known residents have been called to their rest. Mrs. Moran died at her residence, Tatham, on Sunday last, at the age of 76, and her remains were interred in the Roman Catholic burial ground, Casino, on Monday, the funeral being

very largely attended by neighbors and friends of the family in all parts of the district. Mrs. Moran was a resident of the district for about a quarter of a century, and was of a particularly quiet disposition. She was good-hearted to a fault, as many of the earlier settlers can testify. She leaves four sons and two daughters, highly-respected residents, who have the sympathy of a large circle of friends in their sad bereavement.
