hi ! Great great grandfather Patrick Lanigan may have been born in Tipperary around 1828. We know he had at least two brothers Michael born about 1834 and Thomas born about 1830. All we know is that they left Ireland at some point to go to England/Wales and eventually emmigrated to the US. We are searching for birth records, etc. we did find a 1851 census with these three names in Wales with a mother Mary who was a widow and additional brothers : William b 1836, John b 1839, Richard b 1841 and David b 1845 but we have no idea if this is them. Any help would be appreciated! Family story is that they came from Tipperary.

Hi Marianne . .
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out . . .
I did locate your 1851 census family in Wales . . spelled Lanygan . . as you suggested . . BUT . .
having searched round and round . . mostly on Ancestry. . I found little of use to you . .
records from that period in ireland . . are very sketchy . . as you have found out . . .
Searching on " Find my Past " (paid ). . . I used your info. . . and came up with one MARY . . marriage in
TIPPERARY. . in those years . . which ( see below) gives a POSSIBLE spouse . . one JOHN Lanigan . .
of MOYNE . . to a MARY Ryan . . .
http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632751#page/34/mode/1up
Moyne, Templetouhy . . . parishes very close to TEMPLEMORE . . . .
Not sure if this advances your search . . .

Thank you for the possible clue. We are going to keep working on it. We have gotten confirmation on more of a story on the family. The father worked for the Marquis of Waterford lumbering company......we know he died before 1851.... Because we think we found the census of when the mother Mary and the seven sons were in Wales. However, the story is there were twelve children.....and we can't figure out why the mother would go to Wales with the sons and leave five daughters behind......but we also have no idea if the mom came to the US...so,far we have only located the three brothers. Lots of work to do. But wondering if we can get any info, from the fact that the dad worked for that lumbering company? I did search the net but didn't come up with much.

Hi again Marianne . . .
I read with interest . . your reply post . . . and the hints which I found very interesting . .
O.K. here's the thing . .
Your first post centered on Patrick . . being born in Tipperary . . . which begs the question . . is that Tipperary the TOWN
or is that Tipperary the COUNTY ?
_______________________________________________________
Then your family story led you to . . . Marquis of Waterford. . . lumber company . . .
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marquess_of_Waterford
In recent years I had a visit tour of the Marquis's Home . .
The family seat is Curraghmore, near Portlaw, County Waterford, in the Republic of Ireland
This BIG House is situated in close proximity to Waterford City . . Portlaw being set in Waterford County
_____________________________________________________________________
SO . . where I am leading is as follows . . . .
IF . . as the family suggested . . he worked for his Lordships . . lumber company . .
then . . I conclude . . that his Lumber yard . . would have been in close proximity to the big house . .
NOT in Tipperary . . . even though . . your Lanigan family . . could have benn associated with Tipperary TOWN . . possible.
In those years movement around Ireland was very limited .. . .
SO . . I might possibly suggest that your serch Lanigan family should concentrate on the Waterford ( S.Kilkenny) area . .

Are you familiar with the above TREE posted on Ancestry ?? . . is there a connection ??

oH boy the funny thing is I have no idea if it as Tipperary county or town. The caso tree you mentioned above - yes I have been in contact with him. The man who made that tree has no idea why he has waterford on there.... just something he thought he remembered from something. Anyways......we have matched some folks on ancestry with DNA who have passed down family stories about seven brothers leaving Tipperary and going to England for a while and then emiggratign to PA. So, thats all I know. We do have another clue....the possoble brother that we have... MIchael... we think we have located death info for him that says his mother was Mary McCarthy and his father was Thomas Lanigan. Thomas is a family named passed down so that could be it but we arent sure yet I am thinking about just ordering a death certificate for Patrick.... seeing if the parents names are on it. Can I ask you a question? Is there a reason that the records are sketchy from 1800 through theyers I am looking for? The POSSIBLE last brother was David born around 1845... they were in Wales by 1851...IF that censs is actually our family..

Hi (again) Marianne . . .
Searching Roots Ireland (paid) . . for David Lanigan (c1845) . . incl. all Counties in Ireland . . It comes up with the
following hits . . .
_________________________________________________________
Baptismal/Birth Records for Ireland
4 matches for the search criteria: Lanigan (plus variants) David 1840-1850Page: 1 of 1First Page

3) Martin Eliz. Coterel

Not much help to you . . . but process of elimination . . . .
In ALL Ireland search for David Lanigan . . . only two Counties show that name . . Tipperary/Waterford
these locations are geographically possible to Curraghmore House . .

So we just got some new family info. The family lived in Gortagarry... do i need to go to a different message board?
-
Hi (again) Marianne . . .
NO . . you dont need a different notice board . . . keep posting fresh info. on original query . . .
SO . . Gortagarry . . . for official location . . is in NORTH Tipperary . . and a long way (in those years) from the borders of
South Tipperary and Waterford . . . Gotagarry is situated close enough to Templemore . .
________________________________________________
When I search " Griffiths " for your Patrick Lanigan . . in that area I get three hits . . . as follows . . .
Griffith's Valuation for Ireland
3 matches for the search criteria: Lanigan (plus variants) PatrickPage: 1 of 1First Page
SourceSurnameFirst NameTownlandParishCounty Griffith LaniganPatrick Ballycahill Templemore Co. Tipperary Griffith LanniganPatrick Graffin Killavinoge Co. Tipperary GriffithLanniganPatrick JamestownModeshil Co. Tipperary
All three locations are possabilites . . . to pin-point your family . . .
But since you came up with " Gortagarry" . . . then Templemore (being the nearest town of any size) must be top of the list.
_______________________________________________________________
At the risk of wrecking your head altogether . . . can I introduce you to a MAP search asssist . . as follows . . .
( it contains both Gaelic and English ) . . but it does pinpoint . . the many parishes with the same name . .
In the 'search' area . . just insert i.e. Gortagarry . . and/or . . Ballycahill . . or whatever . . and it will give you a very concise breakdown of Parishes . . Townlands . . . and their meaning etc. ( good luck with that !! )

Maybe now . . with your new input to Patrick Lanigan . . you are getting closer and closer to the homestead
_______________________________________________________________
I went back to " Tithes Applotment " ( 1823 -1837) . . with your new info. . . . but . . .
there are too many Lanigan;s (60) listed . . . in all the differing townlands . . . none with reference to Gortagarry . . .
but yes . . lots of Templemore.

Then I searched on " Roots ". . . and found a marriage in 1850 . . between
Patrick Lanigan and Anne Moylan . . in Loughmore N.Tipp. ( in close proximity to the above areas) . . .could be that Loughmore was the Church . . . or . . she was from Loughmore. There is no additional info. Parents / witness etc.
