Born in Ireland 20 March 1834. Married James Arnold CARDWELL in Union County, Kentucky, USA, 30 January 1855. Parents: John ARNOLD and Margaret FITZSIMMONS, both of Ireland (specific location unknown). Because Eleanor carried her mother's surname until she married, I am supposing her parents were not married. However, I have no information either way.
Thought to have immigrated between 1850 and 1855. There were four young men named Fitzsimmons in Union County, Kentucky, in 1850, but Eleanor was not in the census for that year. She first appears as E.A. Cardwell in the 1860 U.S. Federal Census.
Eleanor and her husband had 6 children, all born in Union County, Kentucky, or adjacent counties. Their names were Edmund T., Warner Taylor, Mary Elizabeth, Annabell, Catherine, and Margaret Ellen.
Eleanor moved to St. Louis, Missouri, USA, with three of her four daughters (all unmarried) by 1910. It is thought that they had Cardwell kin in that city, but I have not identified them. It could be that she had Fitzsimmons or other Irish kin in St. Louis.
Eleanor died 14 March 1922 in St. Louis. She is buried in Calvary Cemetery, the city's largest Catholic cemetery. The dates for birth and death are taken from her death certificate, with information provided by one of her daughters.
