Patrick McElwaine was born on the 1st July1897, in Ballylar, Fanad. son to John McElwaine and Mary Friel, His father was known locally as John "the baker" McElwaine because of his family trade at the time. His mother Mary Friel came from just over the road in a townland nearby called Ballinacrick in Fanad.
Patrick was one of a family of nine children of five boys and four girls. His sisters and brothers, oldest to youngest were Margaret "Maggie", Charley, Thomas, Bridget, Catherine "Kitty", Hugh, MaryAnn, and Neil McElwaine, all born between 1885 and 1904.
Patrick McElwaine emigrated to the United States in the 1920's to Pennsylvania, where he met his wife Margaret Helferty, who also emigrated from Termon, another townland that can be found in North Donegal,
Patrick and Margaret got married in Philadelphia in 1929, and settled in Floyd Terrace, Lower Merion, Montgomery, Pennsylvania. (1930 Census) to raise a family of three boys named, John, James Francis, and Frank McElwaine.
Patrick died at the age of 64 in 1961, in Pennsylvania, and his wife Margaret passed away in 1995 at the grand old age of 92. They were laid to rest together in West Chester, Chester, Pennsylvania, USA
