Margaret Styles was born on 19 May 1876 in Baltinglass, Wicklow, Ireland. She was the daughter of Edward Styles, who worked as a harness-maker in Baltinglass and Margaret Kavanagh, a farmer's daughter from Carrigeen, Kildare. Margaret was baptized on 21 May 1876 at the Catholic Church in Baltinglass. Margaret had eight siblings: Robert Styles (b. 1861), Anne "Annie" Styles Nulty (b. 1863), James Styles, (b. 1865), Katherine "Katie" Styles Hayes (b. 1867), William Styles (b. 1869), Edward Styles (b. 1870), Mary C Styles Macken (b. 1874), and Thomas Joseph Styles (b. 1879).
Margaret immigrated to the United States in 1888, and her family settled in Auburn, Cayuga, New York. There she worked as a cook, dressmaker, and trained nurse.
Margaret married a golf professional named Alfred John Ward about 1917. Their marriage record has not been located. Alfred was born in Battersea, Surrey, England, the son of Thomas James Ward and Sarah Hannah Lucy Courtneidge. Margaret and Alfred had one child, James Joseph Ward, who was born on 23 Nov 1920 in Monroe, Michigan, where his father was the professional at the Monroe Golf and Country Club. After her marriage to Alfred, Margaret helped to manage the clubhouses at the golf courses where Alfred worked.
Margaret died of bronchopneumonia at the age of 59 years old on 19 Mar 1936 in Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana, USA, leaving behind her fifteen year-old son James.
