The ruins of the castle sit on the southern point of the Larne Harbour area at Larne Lough. In its day, it would have been an impressive building, built it is thought, as a defensive tower house. There is some debate as to its exact date of construction. Some believe it was built in about 1250 while others say it has a much earlier date of construction, connecting it to the Vikings. For many years now, the castle has been in a ruined state.
