Sarah Martin was born on the 11th Feb 1873, daughter to Owen Martin and Sarah McCarron.

Her father Owen Martin, was born in a beautiful scenic seaside location of Doughcrabbin in Fanad, and her mother Sarah McCarron came from a townland not far from there called Murrin. Sarah was one of a medium sized family of 5 children, one boy and four girls. Her brother and sisters, oldest to youngest were Margaret, Catherine, Anne ‘Nancy’, and John, all born between 1867 and 1881.

Susan emigrated to the United States in 1892, nearby to where her husband to be Patrick McElwaine, a local Fanad man had also emigrated to Pennsylvania just a few years before her in 1887. Susan and Patrick McElwaine got married in Philadelphia in 1894, and stayed for a few years working in Montrose St, Philadelphia, before returning home to Fanad with a young family in early 1901

A few months later the 1901 Irish Census was taken in Fanad, showing Patrick McElwaine at his parents residence in Magheradrumman, while Sarah was nearby at her parents residence in Drumnacraig, along with her son Edward, John and new born baby James Martin. By the time the next census was taken 1911, Patrick McElwaine and Sarah Martin had their own family home, built at his father’s farm, where they raised their children Edward, John and James, Mary and Patrick.

In 1927, Patrick and Susan along with some of their children John, Mary, Patrick can be found emigrated once again, this time returning for good to Philadelphia, USA, where Patrick McElwaine worked as a Steelworker and Sarah a housewife.Their James joined sometime soon after, working in the same trade as his father.

Patrick McElwaine died in 1944, at the age of 77 and Sarah Martin passed away in 1954. They were laid to rest together in Holy Cross Cemetery Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.
