These simple, wooden structures were built to house evicted families. The Land League, first mobilised in Co. Mayo aimed to represent and assist tenants in their fight for the '3 Fs' – fair rent, fixity of tenure and free sale. The Ladies Land League were particularly involved in the housing of those evicted and organised the provision of the units. Money sent from America, was also distributed to those who needed it. Charles Stewart Parnell asserted that the hunts 'gave the tenants, a chance of following the counsels of the No Rent manifesto...’, functioning, he said, 'as a permanent sign and symbol that all power did not lie with the foreign enemy in possession of the country’.
N.B. Huts like the one above did exist in Kildare though the above image may not actually represent the exact dwellings there. They were made available all over the country as necessary.
