As I recall from my time at The School of Irish Studies in Dublin in the 1970s, Bective Abbey House belonged to and was live in by Mary Lavin, the renowned short story writer and her husband, Michael Scott, a former Australian Jesuit, who was then the dean of the school.
Bective Abbey is a Cistercian Abbey founded in 1147. The site, now in a ruined state, overlooks the river Boyne and is close to the town of Navan. It is unlike other Cistercian sites because of this prominence. Many abbeys were keen to locate themselves in quiet, remote almost hidden areas. At its height, it was 2nd in importance in Ireland only to Mellifont Abbey and so was a very important religious centre, and quite a rich one too.
Part of the Mel Gibson film 'Braveheart was filmed here.
