This is another beautiful yet sad image from Robert French of the Lawrence Collection in the National Library of Ireland. He has recorded this cabin, pictured right, as that of Mick McQuaid, though "Mick" is a fictional caracter. from the 1880's popular magazine named 'The Shamrock'.
While the character of Mick may be made up, this little cabin was home to some poor unfortunate (or fortunate enough to have a home?) The National Library believe that it is dated c.1865-1914 though possibly after 1895. The stones in the landscape work as raw materials for the stone walls and also keep the thatch from blowing off in heavy winds. Despite the inherent poverty there is a beauty in the scenery on their doorstep.
