Catherine (1790-1876) and Thomas Neary Sr. (1795-1880) of Clooncullaan had a number of children living in this townland, to include Peter Neary (1806-1886) and Michael Neary (1813-1886).
In 1835 the Tithe Applotment records for "Clooncullane" show George Dodwell Esq. held 167 acres here. Clooncullan was part of the Dodwell estate until 1800 when Frances Dodwell of Carrowgarry married Alexander Crichton. Capt. George Dodwell, of Kevinsfort House, acted as agent to some of the large estates here and in Sligo.
In 1857, the name Thomas Narry (Tomás Ó Náraigh) appears 8 times on Land Valuation records in Co. Roscommon. See Clooncullaan (farm 1, 13, 21 and 24*); Laghtcausk (farm 10*); Ross More East (farm 1); Ross Beg (farm 2) Runnaruag (farm 4) and Mihanagh (farm 2).
The Neary surname was recorded as "Narry" on Griffith's Valuation 1857. At that time, the family was Irish speaking and would have been known locally as Ó Náraigh [O' NAA-ry] hence "Narry" – an Anglicised attempt at spelling "Ó Náradhaigh". In 1857, Ó Náraigh was a common surname in the the parishes of Elphin (Clooncullaan; Laghtcausk; Ross More East; Ross Beg; Runnaruag; Tansyfield; and Tullyloyd) and Kiltrustan (Mihanagh, Largan, Cuilmore) and does not appear on landholder records anywhere else in Co Roscommon at that time.
